To understand and explore this landscape, we infuse the digital practices of making and writing with contemporary critical approaches to cultural technologies, media philosophy, the critique and investigation of electronic and new media arts, and studies in science fiction, trans-global politics and science.

Position Summary

The Emergent Digital Practices program is accepting applications for one non-tenure track, one-year Visiting Teaching Assistant Professor in Emergent Digital Practices to begin fall 2020. The University of Denver operates on a quarter system with classes beginning September 12th and ending on June 10th. EDP especially encourages applications from women, minorities, members of the LBGT community, people with disabilities and veterans.

We seek an artist/scholar who is creatively and critically engaged in the practices and discourses of New Media. The successful candidate will demonstrate the potential for excellent teaching and will have a creative practice utilizing digital tools. We are looking for candidates with capabilities to teach our foundations courses in: Digital Imaging (raster, vector) and Time-based Media. In addition, candidates may need to teach a cultural/critical class (broadly defined as the history, aesthetics, and theory of various making subcultures in the digital realm) to majors and students across the University. We will be looking to fill the Visiting Teaching Assistant Professor position for the upcoming academic year.

Essential Functions

Teach eight courses in the Emergent Digital Practices Program. These include: up to six sections in our foundation sequence: EDPX 2000 Imaging and EDPX 2400 Time, and one or more sections of upper division classes within their area of specialty including teaching digital cultures courses (broadly defined as history, art, internet, and other subcultures in the digital realm). The successful applicant will be required to teach at multiple levels of a curriculum that includes a BA, BFA, MA, and MFA.

The courses would include undergraduate foundation-level studio courses, upper level elective studio courses tied to the practice of the candidate and a perhaps a critically oriented class connected to discourses in Emergent Media in the interest/specialty or the candidate. Classes on campus are taught in well-equipped Mac studios and several state-of-the-art creative and performative spaces. Candidates should also be prepared to teach classes online if needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The successful candidate will demonstrate through their portfolio of works an understanding of, and experience creating with, a range of digital tools. For Imaging: creation and manipulation of images with raster and vector image editing software packages. We have adopted and teach with Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer. Experience with other vector and raster software packages will be helpful but not required. For Time-based media: creation and manipulation of sequences of images, audio, transitions, and basic video/audio editing. We have adopted and teach with Final Cut Pro and Audacity. For upper division classes: a portfolio of professional work that reflects experience in topic. Candidates should be able to work effectively with ethnically/racially diverse populations and bring a multicultural perspective to our program and students.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD/MFA or equivalent terminal degree at time of appointment.
  • A professional creative practice utilizing digital tools or equivalent professional experience with a teaching background and a professional creative practice utilizing digital tools.
  • Candidate must be able to teach the basics of bitmap & vector visual imaging using Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer and teach the foundations of time-based media using Final Cut Pro, Audacity, and possibly Premiere Pro.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD/MFA or equivalent terminal degree in hand at time of application.
  • A professional creative practice utilizing digital tools.
  • Previous experience teaching Digital Imaging in a higher education setting.
  • Previous experience teaching the foundations of Time-based media in a higher education setting.
  • Previous teaching experience in an online environment.

Salary will be determined by the qualifications of the selected candidate balanced with departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.
