The Josef Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver is an interdisciplinary professional school of international studies that prepares students for careers in the public, private and non-profit sectors. Our program provides students with the knowledge, skills, and networks to design policies, implement programs, and realize outcomes that enhance human capabilities around the world. We offer a Ph.D. degree in International Studies and Masters degrees in International Development, Human Rights, International Studies, Global Finance, Trade & Economic Integration, Security, and Public Policy. We also offer graduate certificate programs in Global Health Affairs, Humanitarian Assistance, Global Business, and Corporate Social Responsibility, Homeland Security, Global Environmental Change and Adaptation, and Religion and International Affairs as well as joint or dual degree programs with Sturm College of Law, Daniels College of Business, the Graduate School of Social Work and with the department of Media, Film and Journalism Studies. At the undergraduate level, we offer both International Studies and Public Policy majors and minors.

Position Summary

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM MANAGEMENT: This position coordinates and manages the required internship program, including hiring, training and supervising student staff. It implements processes for the required graduate internship requirement. This position follows University policies for international experiential learning including risk management considerations and the administration of organizational agreements, as appropriate. It manages funding for internships, reviews and carries out processes for domestic and international internships. This position works with a variety of stakeholders internally (i.e. Alumni, Admissions, Student Affairs, Risk Management, Office of Internationalization, University Counsel, other DU Career Services staff) and externally (internship supervisors, employers, internship fund donors). This position serves as the primary contact for students with internship questions. 

OFFICE MANAGEMENT: This position ensures smooth office operations by managing a variety of administrative duties including providing front-line in-person, phone and email customer service; tracking inventory and ordering office supplies; reconciling Director’s and Associate Director’s P-Card statements; training and supervising student staff; managing the schedules of student staff; providing general support for events and programs; ad hoc survey creation; assisting with data analysis and report creation as needed; other projects as needed.

This position will demonstrate advocacy of inclusive excellence values in student professional development and employer relationship management.  The position reports to the Director of the Korbel Office of Career & Professional Development.

This is a non-benefited position not to exceed 1,000 hours in a calendar year. 

Essential Functions

Internship Program Management

  • Review internship applications for degree/career fit, check requirements are met and approve and register or deny approval.
  • Work with DU’s Risk Management Office on approvals for International Internships.
  • Communicate directly with students regarding internship registration, funding, and close-outs to complete internship requirements.
  • Communicate directly with employers regarding their role and to clarify processes and answer questions.
  • Keep detailed records in PCO of all correspondence and conversations regarding internships.
  • Conduct outreach to groups of students to remind them about next steps in completing their internship requirement (i.e. students who haven’t applied to register an internship; students who started an application, but haven’t completed it; students who haven’t closed out their internship after their internship end date; etc.).
  • Monitor and answer email.
  • Answer students’ technical questions.
  • Keep internship materials up to date with new policies, etc.
  • Input final grades.

Office Management

  • Provide front-line in-person, phone and email customer service.
  • Train and supervise student employees including:
    • One Internship Assistant
    • 3-4 Customer Service Representatives who are responsible for reception duties and posting jobs/internships.
  • Order supplies, P-Card assistance
  • Set quarterly student staff schedule
  • Hold student staff meetings (2-3 quarterly) and participate in OCPD and Korbel staff meetings

Special Projects and Other Duties

  • Ad hoc survey creation.
  • Data analysis and report creation assistance.
  • Assist with Zoom or room-setup.
  • Assist with advertising events.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Understanding of international affairs and public policy job market and Korbel graduate degree programs
  • Strong service orientation, excellent interpersonal and advising skills, and sensitivity to the needs of diverse populations.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.  Ability to communicate professionally with a wide range of students, faculty, staff and employers.
  • Cultural competency and the ability to understand and appreciate cultural differences that affect student experience and to communicate effectively across cultures.
  • Desire to define problems, establish facts, and provide solutions.
  • Capacity to balance multiple and varied tasks, meet deadlines, and use well-developed time management and organizational skills.
  • Experience with the Career Services Management Systems such 12Twenty preferred.
  • Previous experience within APSIA preferred.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivelent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with MS Office, especially Word, Excel and PPT.
  • Demonstrated experience managing a program or project.

Preferred Qualifications

  • International Affairs industry experience.
  • Experience working in a higher education institution.
  • Career services experience.
  • Experience with PCO and Banner.

Work Schedule

Part Time, 20 hours per week, hours may be between Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Flexibility in schedule, will be discussed further.
