The Office of Teaching and Learning (OTL) fosters innovation and strengthens practices in teaching, course design and curriculum development to improve learning across the university.

Position Summary

The Director of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) and Faculty Learning Communities (FLCs) will lead and specialize in two areas: (1) promoting and implementing multiple faculty learning communities; and (2) promoting a culture of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) through both faculty education and support. These initiatives align with DUs commitment to the teacher-scholar model. The Director works in collaboration with the OTL staff and DU faculty members to develop and lead workshops, create and facilitate teaching-related programs and initiatives, consult with faculty members and departments, and contribute to a national dialogue about teaching, learning, and assessment. Contributing to an inclusive, thriving faculty community and a dynamic and collaborative Office of Teaching (OTL) is central to this position.

The Director of SoTL and FLCs will be responsible for using evidence-informed decision making to develop, implement, and assess a range of programs that support the professional development of individual faculty and academic leaders across the academic lifespan and appointment types. Additionally, the director will enhance and support the implementation of institution-wide initiatives related to teaching and learning, inclusive excellence, faculty learning communities, faculty mentoring, leadership development, and assessment.

This is a full-time (12 month) staff position with full benefits. The position will report to the Director of the Office of Teaching and Learning who reports directly to the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs. The Director of SoTL and FLCs will collaborate with faculty and administrators on the creation and delivery of new programs and will have the opportunity to interact with colleagues across campus.

The ideal candidate is adept at interacting with faculty across different disciplines and knowledgeable about the challenges they face. Experience as a faculty member in a university setting and a record of SoTL publications would be particularly competitive.

Essential Functions

  • Review current DU practice and lead initiatives to improve processes related to supporting Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) and Faculty Learning Communities (FLCs).
  • Design, implement, assess, and report on comprehensive FLC and SoTL programming (e.g. workshops, institutes, seminars, conferences, learning communities, etc.) across disciplines and appointment types (i.e. tenure line, teaching, clinical, etc.).
  • Active collaboration with other OTL directors on ongoing programming and initiatives related to inclusive excellence, integrative learning, High Impact Practices, curricular design, assessment, and accreditation.
  • Collaborate with faculty leaders in design and facilitation of faculty-led FLCs.
  • Evaluate and assess faculty satisfaction and program effectiveness.
  • Facilitate interdisciplinary collaborations across the university to strategically advance institutional capacity related to SoTL and FLCs
    1:1 consultations with faculty related to areas of expertise including all phases in the research cycle.
  • Create educational products, artifacts, and/or other asynchronous resources to support FLC and SoTL initiatives.
  • Provide opportunities to showcase SoTL projects (i.e. conferences, web presence, events).
  • Maintain currency in the field and contribute to national conversations through scholarship and/or engagement with relevant professional associations.
  • Assist OTL team in building a data informed decision-making processes.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated understanding of current evidence-informed practices related to faculty development, teaching practice, Faculty Learning Communities, SoTL, and trends in higher education.
  • Extensive knowledge of best practices in research and survey design, methodology, analysis, interpretation, data visualization, and the publication process.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to implement current professional approaches around the development, implementation, assessment, and evaluation of programming for faculty across various disciplinary areas, career stages, and appointment types.
  • Ability to develop cross-campus relationships that allow for connecting faculty members to appropriate resources that will support their overall success in the institution.
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to maintain collaborative and confidential relationships.
  • Understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education and evidence of success working with faculty from minoritized groups.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and demonstrated success with project management.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD or equivalent terminal degree.
  • Demonstrated success working with faculty on initiatives related to professional development/faculty education.
  • Demonstrated success working with diverse disciplines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A record of teaching, mentoring, and/or scholarly excellence as a university faculty member.
  • Experience as a member of a leadership team.
  • Record of SoTL publications.
  • Knowledge of multiple data analysis platforms and citation management systems such as SPSS, Stata, NVivo, Dedoose, and Zotero.

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Salary Grade Number
The salary grade for the position is 13.

Salary Range
The salary range for this position is $80,000 - $85,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
