Career & Professional Development is uniquely aligned within the Advancement Division to intentionally leverage the global DU network of advocates including alumni, parents and friends for career support and employment connections.

Career and Professional Development (CPD) is a part of the Global Networks team within DU’s Advancement office. CPD is one of four offices on campus providing career development services to a diverse community of DU students and alumni. CPD serves all of the undergraduate programs, University College, multiple graduate programs, and alumni not served by the other career services offices on campus. We provide a full range of services including one-on-one career advising, workshops, programming/events, career fairs, on-campus recruiting, access to thousands of jobs, internships and alumni and employer connections. Career & Professional Development is a very fast-paced, busy office that connects with students, alumni, faculty, staff, a wide variety of departments and divisions across campus, employers, parents and the community.

Position Summary

The Assistant Director of Alumni Career & Professional Development plans, implements and provides direct, comprehensive alumni professional development programs that reach alumni from diverse backgrounds and at all stages of their careers. This is accomplished in-person and virtually via online tools. The Assistant Director will also coach alumni approximately 5 hours per week through career transitions via live, telephone, virtual and/or group settings. The Assistant Director supports the Director of Alumni Career and Professional Development in creating strategy to advance the University’s use of alumni professional development as an engagement tool. They must demonstrate a commitment to the principles of multiculturalism and diversity.

Essential Functions

Career Services Coordination and Collaboration

  • Engage DU alumni through robust programming that provides career advice and professional development to alumni across the spectrum of background, age, industry and location and via individual, small and large group opportunities.
  • Coordinate with other career services offices and departments on campus, with special attention to the central graduate-student team, and other divisions of University Advancement to create partnerships that leverage university-wide expertise, produce programs that appeal to a wide range of alumni and meet the needs of the university community.
  • Work with the communications and marketing staff to create and disseminate marketing materials, including identifying content relevant to audiences from diverse backgrounds.

Career Advising and Program Development

  • Develop, manage and implement strategic professional development programs and activities for alumni from diverse backgrounds and at all stages of their careers.
  • Design and implement programming that reaches alumni locally, nationally and internationally, including identifying and evaluating live and virtual programming resources and negotiating with internal and external vendors and service providers.
  • Support the operation of the DU Career Network, the University’s networking and mentoring platform, to maximize and increase use by students, alumni, parents and the entire DU community.
  • Oversee the Career Coach Referral program by communicating with coaches, soliciting feedback, marketing and adjusting the program as necessary so it best serves Alumni Career & Professional Development, all participants and alumni.
  • Provide strategic oversight and/or oversee staff or outside vendors who provide career services to individuals and groups of alumni.

Partnerships & University Citizenship

  • Serve as an active and collaborative partner to all central and unit-based Advancement and Career & Professional Development functions and other campus colleagues, to foster strategic, effective, and collaborative career and professional development practices.
  • Model One DU leadership.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Superior presentation and facilitation skills in both live and virtual environments.
  • Knowledge of local, national, and international job markets.
  • Knowledge of personal marketing and branding techniques.
  • Understanding of career development issues affecting graduate students, alumni at all levels and from diverse backgrounds and the ability to identify and analyze employment trends affecting them.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions.
  • Cultural competency, which includes the ability to understand and appreciate cultural differences that impact alumni and the ability to communicate effectively across cultures.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to speak effectively and credibly to a wide range of student/clients, employers, faculty and University administrators.
  • Strong spelling and grammar skills to critique cover letters and resumes, create email communications, and strategize and design marketing and communications materials.
  • Familiarity with a range of career assessment instruments.
  • Ability to demonstrate entrepreneurial attitude that supports work in an innovative area.
  • Experience working with external vendors to achieve goals.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent combination of education or work experience (Veterans with equivalent combination of military certification/education and experience may substitute for the degree qualification).
  • 3 years of experience providing career coaching and/or professional development services to adults or similar experience in training and coaching in a different setting.
  • Experience designing, coordinating and presenting career and/or general workshops and events that appeal to a wide variety of alumni from diverse backgrounds and at different career stages including sourcing speakers and presenters.
  • Experience evaluating and using online tools to deliver educational content.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor or Masters degree in Counseling, Higher Education, Student Affairs, Adult Education, or other related field.
  • Experience providing professional development services to alumni in a higher education setting or other adult audiences in business, nonprofits, the government or private practice.
  • Experience evaluating and using online tools to deliver educational content.
  • Certification to administer career assessment instruments (e.g., Myers Briggs, CliftonStrengths or similar)

Work Schedule

  • Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
  • Some nights and weekends, as required

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 9.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $55,000 - $60,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
