Position Summary 

The University of Denver Health and Counseling Center (HCC) is seeking a full-time physician (5 days per week to start immediately) to join an innovative and progressive interdisciplinary team providing ongoing primary health care to University of Denver students.  We are seeking an astute clinician familiar with the healthcare needs of college students and the experience to function independently and collaboratively within the HCC. The ideal candidate should be familiar and comfortable with incorporating the values of equity, diversity, and inclusion into their daily work. The mission of the University of Denver Health and Counseling Center is to enhance overall student well-being and success through inclusive physical and mental healthcare, prevention, education, advocacy, and recovery support services. The HCC is an on-campus health facility providing a wide range of on-site and telehealth medical and mental health services.  Physicians, nurses, psychologists, physician assistants, and other professionals staff the HCC. This position is an independent contractor position and reports to the Medical Director of the HCC and performs duties under the direction of the Medical Director, Associate Director of Medical Services, and Executive Director of the HCC.


The following duties are customary for this position but are not to be construed as all-inclusive.  Duties may be added, deleted, and assigned based on management discretion and institutional needs.

  • provide general and preventive medical care (both in-person and via telehealth), diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret lab/radiology tests, prescribe medicine and treatments and seek appropriate consultation when needed
  • provide women’s health services (including IUD and contraceptive implant insertion/removal), urgent care, sports medicine, and urgent care services
  • provide affirming health services to transgender and nonbinary students
  • acts as a consultant to clinical staff on medical issues and serve as supervisory physician for physician assistants regarding state regulatory requirements
  • arrange appropriate timely referrals for specialty care as needed with proper follow-up 
  • maintain accurate, thorough, and clear patient medical records in a timely manner according to HCC policies and procedures which justify diagnoses, treatments, and billing codes.  
  • order/perform CLIA waived laboratory tests, obtain necessary samples for laboratory testing, including the performance of pap smears and wet mounts when indicated
  • perform duties in a cost-effective manner, striving to avoid wasting resources without jeopardizing quality of care and service
  • maintain competency and enhance professional growth and development through continuing education activities, share knowledge gained through continuing education with staff
  • interact with patients, visitors, and HCC staff in a courteous manner, and demonstrate a sincere initiative in meeting patient needs, ensure confidentiality of patient and institutional material, place appropriate forms to be scanned in the electronic medical record according to the nature of the patient visit
  • support and uphold clinic policies, objectives, quality improvement, safety, environmental and infection control procedures, and codes and requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies
  • maintain positive behaviors, approaches, attitudes, and a commitment to interpersonal service towards patients, visitors, and co-workers
  • assist in developing and meeting goals for the HCC as a whole, ensure that the department meets HCC goals, and assist in health promotion activities on campus when needed
  • assist in policy-making, quality improvement, updating and implementing protocols as they pertain to health care delivery
  • communicate effectively and compassionately with students, parents, professors, etc., as requested with the proper authorization
  • serve as a staff resource for patient care information, respond to and intervene, as necessary, to resolve patient problems and serve as a patient advocate
  • perform in-person and telehealth triage and healthcare visits and give medical advice according to education, training, and HCC guidelines and protocols

*Physician Assistants will work under the supervision of HCC physicians. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  • This position requires sophisticated written and verbal communication skills, and involves meetings with students, administrators, providers, and off campus vendors.
  • A basic understanding of math and basic statistics is required. 
  • Able to understand and relate to complex theories behind several related concepts.
  • Able to concentrate on fine details with constant interruption.
  • Able to remember multiple tasks/assignments given to self and others for a long period of time.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills with the ability to function independently with a broad perspective, maturity, discretion, and confidentiality.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with various students, parents, coworkers, and departments with a positive attitude and to adapt to change with equanimity.
  • This position also requires extensive collaboration with a variety of people and offices on campus.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Required Qualifications

  • A doctor of medicine (MD) or doctor of osteopathy (DO) degree from an accredited medical school and board certified/eligible in a primary care specialty (expectation is to become board certified within 1 year of employment)
  • required 3 years’ experience in a primary care setting after residency
  • appropriate medical credentials including unencumbered Colorado license, DEA registration/full prescriptive authority, NPI number
  • current BLS or ACLS
  • experience with the health problems of young adults
  • eligible to obtain adequate professional liability insurance coverage
  • excellence in interpersonal, written, and verbal communication with an ability to function independently and show initiative in managing multidisciplinary/interdepartmental personnel and situations
  • strong and proven skills in patient history taking; physical examination, including gynecology; diagnosis; and treatment with a high technical and professional competence
  • appreciation for, knowledge and application of the preventive aspects of health care  
  • a broad perspective, maturity, proficient information gathering, and discretion.
  • the ability to operate a wide variety of medical equipment, as well as a personal computer, fax machine, and photocopier
  • familiarity with electronic medical records
  • demonstrated problem-solving and work flow management skills
  • demonstrated ability to integrate the concepts of diversity, equity, and inclusion into daily clinical and administrative tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years’ experience in an ambulatory care setting
  • Experience in a college health environment


The base salary for this position is $165,000-185,000. In addition to the base salary, 28.5% in additional compensation is added to base compensation making the total compensation range from $212,000 - $237,725. This position is treated as an independent contractor.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
