Position Summary

The Associate Director serves as a member of Housing and Residential Education senior leadership team and directly reports to the Executive Director. The Associate Director is responsible for the comprehensive management of all housing and operational processes, including, management of housing capacity and occupancy levels, reporting & data analysis, assignments, space and facilities management. This position performs a variety of important administrative and operational functions including, but not limited, to opening and closing coordination, facilities and occupancy management, emergency protocol development, management of off-campus services, and front desk operations.

The Associate Director is responsible for the direct supervision, training, and evaluation of 2 Assistant Directors (AD), 1 Graduate Resident Director (GRD), and Fraternity & Sorority Life House Managers. The Associate Director plays a significant role in furthering the mission of the University of Denver, the strategic initiatives of the Division of Student Affairs and Inclusive Excellence and the mission, vision, and core values of Housing and Residential Education.

Essential Functions


  • Plans and proposes housing capacity usage, supports enrollment management efforts, creates and completes capacity and occupancy plan, including the management of assignment processes for six residence halls, seven apartment complexes, and fraternity & sorority properties
  • Assists in the management and development of housing software systems, including oversight of StarRez Housing Software and other housing management related systems utilized by DU (C-Cure, Blackboard, TMA, Banner).
  • Provides oversight for the accurate administration of student account billing
  • Serves as the liaison between HRE and appropriate University offices such as including but not limited to Financial Services,
  • Athletics and Recreation, Disability Services Program, International Student & Scholar Services, Living and Learning Communities
  • Oversight of reporting and comprehensive management of data generation and analytic reporting in collaboration with Assistant
  • Director of Occupancy as needed by the department and division; prepares reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information, enrollment & occupancy data and trends
  • Conduct yearly review and edits of Housing Contract with Financial Manager and Executive Director

Residential Operations

  • Develop a comprehensive knowledge of and strategic direction for all Housing and Residential Education operations
  • Manages the strategy and execution of day-to-day operations for both facilities for residential buildings, including work order review, coordination of vendors, and serves as the liaison to Facilities Management & Custodial Services
  • Coordinates the project management and implementation of housing system and operational processes, including, opening/closing coordination, transitional periods, early arrival program, break and summer housing
    Manage and develop operational forecasts for both facilities and occupancy that directly impact University functions
  • Provides oversight and management for off-campus services and leads efforts to provide resources and oversees an on-line housing website, Off-Campus Partners
  • Oversight of all Residence hall front desk operations
  • Projects and plans, in conjunction with divisional leadership, HRE property capital projects and participates in construction meetings and planning events related to new projects
  • Serves as the liaison between Housing and Residential Education and appropriate University offices such as including but not limited to Facilities Management and Custodial Services, Department of Campus Safety, Information Technology, Fraternity & Sorority Life, Athletics, Student Financial Services, Student Rights and Responsibilities, Student Outreach & Support

Staff Training, Supervision, and Development

  • Supervise, train, and evaluate 2 Assistant Directors and 1 Graduate Assistant and indirectly supervises Fraternity & Sorority Life (FSL) House Mangers
  • Create a supportive environment that promotes the professional and personal development of each staff member

Student Rights Responsibilities

  • Serve as a High-Level Case Resolution Officer and appellate for violations of the Guide to Residence Living and the Honor Code in accordance with Student Rights & Responsibilities (SRR)

Duty Responsibilities

  • Participate in a 24/7 Senior Administrator on-call duty and emergency response system for the entire DU residential population
  • The On-Duty Associate Director will respond to emergency and crisis calls, and keep the Executive Director for HRE and Student Affairs Executive Leadership Team informed of life-threatening emergencies or serious disruptions that may require campus intervention or follow-up

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Familiarity and proficiency with housing software systems, such as, StarRez
  • Attention to detail, with a highly organized approach to data/project management
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data, processes and needs based on limited information and to research solutions
  • Knowledge of relevant federal and state laws
  • Excellent collaboration and interpersonal skills along with the ability to work with a diverse population of administrators, faculty, staff, students and external constituents.
  • Knowledge of legal issues and risk management practices.
  • Understanding regarding Housing operations, processes, front desk operations.
    Strong leadership experience

Required Qualifications

  • Masters Degree in Student Affairs/College Personnel, Business, or a related area of study
  • Demonstrated record of building teams and collaborative partnerships with colleagues and key stakeholder groups
  • Experience designing trainings for and with diverse student and employee populations, and a demonstrated commitment to equity and social justice
  • Strong housing operational experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • 4-6 years of post-Master work experience within residence life as well as someone who has demonstrated leadership and supervisory ability and ability to work effectively with staff and students.
  • 3-4 years of supervisory experience.

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Evenings and weekends as required.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 10.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $58,000 - $68,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
