The Director of Prospect Development will provide dynamic and analytical leadership to the prospect development team, consisting of prospect management and prospect research. This team is responsible for identifying prospects to achieve the University's fundraising priorities, and for advising development staff in the strategic management of donor relationships (including recording and reporting on these interactions). The director will provide insight and direction in operational and cultural practices by managing an integrated model designed to synthesize prospect development into a truly collaborative partnership with the University's fundraising and engagement professionals.
The director is expected to be a subject matter expert in a wide array of research tools and databases, financial analysis for wealth assessment, products related to overall research analysis, report writing tools, and prospect development software. This person must have the experience to lead the team in its ability to maximize the creative opportunities derived from the intersection of data, technology, and creative prospect identification. This position will regularly interact with key stakeholders which include advancement leadership, development and engagement professionals, advancement services staff, and campus partners.
- Direct prospect management team in a coordinated and systematic approach to prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies in direct collaboration with development officers and campus partners, in order to ensure that the value of development officer portfolios is increased, and that philanthropic potential is optimized.
- Collaborate with development leadership to track fundraising activities, determine reporting needs, and create strategies for identifying new prospects.
- Develop goals, operational standards, and benchmarking for assigned functional area. Evaluate effectiveness and implement changes as needed to ensure a high level of service.
- Work with development leadership to ensure that prospect management policies and procedures are implemented in an effective manner.
- Direct the prospect research team, which provides focus for portfolio and pipeline management best practices through prospect identification, data analysis, portfolio optimization, and related services in support of effective fundraising programs and activities.
- Manage the team to efficiently utilize resources appropriate to the scope of the information requested.
- These resources may include, but are not limited to, a variety of online databases of financial, biographical, real estate, and philanthropic information; current donor, student, and alumni records; a variety of printed reference works, periodicals, and other library resources; community resources; and government/legal documents.
- Collaborate with the Business Intelligence and Analytics team to provide reliable and timely qualitative and quantitative data and trend analysis that supports the strategic and tactical planning and operational effectiveness of key fundraising programs, including annual, major, principal, and planned giving.
- Collaborate with colleagues to create donor profiles, fundraising summaries, stewardship reports, and other written materials for internal and external clients.
- Work with Development leadership and the Executive Director of Strategic Analytics & Prospect Development to set strategic goals for the Prospect Management team.
- Supervise the team, to include hiring, mentoring, goal setting, continuous feedback, professional development, and performance evaluation.
- Employ effective outreach and client-centered educational opportunities to ensure that Advancement staff, campus leadership, deans, and key leadership volunteers are appropriately educated and trained in the policies, products, and services offered by prospect development.
- Plan and manage regular meetings for the team.
- Establish and monitor annual budget, projecting personnel and resource needs.
- Work with campus partners to maximize opportunities to know our prospects by ensuring the steady flow of data and information between units and teams.
- Inform prospect management and prospect research software purchase projects.
- Serve as an active and collaborative partner to all central and unit-based advancement functions, the Chancellor’s Office, and other campus colleagues, to foster strategic, effective, and collaborative fundraising practices. Model “One DU” thinking.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to think critically, strategically, and creatively. High level of comfort with understanding, manipulating, and communicating complex data to a wide variety of audiences.
- Well-developed knowledge of the principals of prospect development, including prospect identification, research and management, as well as data analysis, querying and reporting.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Proven ability to work with a high level of independence, maintain confidentiality, and prioritize assignments.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills to foster and maintain effective relationships with colleagues, alumni, donors, volunteers, and University officials.
- Ability to interact effectively with diverse groups who have competing interests and priorities within the University and community.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education or work experience (Veterans with an equivalent combination of military certification/education and experience may substitute these qualifications for the degree qualification.).
- 5 years of prospect development experience.
- Graduate degree in related field.
- Experience in relationship-based fundraising and/or prospect development and/or data analytics in a higher education or nonprofit environment.
- Prospect development experience with multiple organizations.
- Experience working with Banner, CRM Advance (or similar contemporary CRM solutions), and Microsoft Office products.
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Evenings and weekends as required.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 13.
The salary range for this position is $80,000-$105,000.
The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
