The Center for World Languages and Cultures (CWLC) promotes engaged learning, teaching, and practice of the world’s languages and cultures; integrates languages and cultures into all disciplines and fields of study; and builds and supports interculturally competent communities through the exploration and experience of languages and cultures at the University of Denver with its local and global communities and partners. Housed in the CWLC, the first-year language program offers study in ten languages and aids the students to experience the world through the lens of an acquired language, and understand cultures – another’s and their own – from a position different to their primary language and cultural identification. The linguistic contribution to intercultural competency – that is to say, understanding another culture in the language of that culture and not just through the translations and perspectives of a mother-tongue and culture – is integral to achieving personal, social, and professional successes in a multi-cultural and global future.

The first-year German program provides students with an introduction to German language and culture and prepares them to study further through the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (LL&C). Here students gain a deep knowledge of German culture, history, art, literature, and politics. Students work with faculty to hone their written and oral communication skills. The department offers a minor, a major, and complements majors in international studies, international business, and intercultural communications.

Position Summary

The University of Denver will hire a full-time, appointed German teaching assistant professor, to teach the first-year German language sequence, and to coordinate the multi-section beginning sequence. This is a non-tenure track position that provides a three-year contract with full benefits and is renewable with the possibility of promotion. The appointment will start on September 1st, 2023. Course load is eight (8) courses per year in a quarter calendar. Other responsibilities include: developing a rigorous first-year curriculum, training of adjunct faculty, leading German section meetings, implementing the programmatic assessment in the spring, participating in retention and recruitment efforts, advising students on placement, collaborating with colleagues in the CWLC, with colleagues in the Department of Languages, Literatures, & Cultures, and across University programs and departments. Candidates who demonstrate potential for teaching excellence will be strongly preferred. We are especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion through their teaching and service.

Essential Functions


  • Teaching load is eight classes over three academic quarters, focusing primarily on first-year language courses, with the possibility of contributing to the intermediate sequence in the German program,
  • Developing first-year sequence curriculum and assessments
  • Coordinating sections and supervising adjunct faculty


  • Assessment of the first-year German program,
  • Participation in CWLC meetings and committees, as well as CAHSS and University committees,
  • Active collaboration with CWLC colleagues and with the department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures program faculty.
  • Participation in program promotional activities outside the classroom.


  • Active scholarship is desirable and supported, though it is not a job requirement for this position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion through teaching and service.

Required Qualifications

  • MA or ABD in German linguistics, Second Language Acquisition with a focus on German, or German Literature and Culture by the time of application. Closely related fields will be given consideration as well.
  • Native or near-native level command of German and English.
  • Extended residence and/or extensive travel in Germany.
  • 2 years of experience teaching German at the college or university level in the United States (e.g. Teaching Assistant as an “instructor of record” with grading responsibilities).
  • Evidence of a commitment to incorporate teaching methods to engage diverse student populations effectively.
  • Evidence of teaching using task-based, communicative methodologies which prioritize student-student interactions.
  • Experience or willingness to learn course management systems such as Canvas.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in German linguistics, Second Language Acquisition with a focus on German, or German Literature and Culture in hand by August 31st, 2023. Closely related fields will be given consideration as well.
  • 3+ years of experience teaching German at the college or university level in the United States, especially with courses from the first-year language sequence.
  • Experience in assessment of 1st year program.
  • Demonstrated experience or evidence of a commitment to incorporate inclusive excellence teaching methods and/or pedagogies to effectively engage broadly diverse student populations.

Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

The salary grade for the position is UC.

Salary Range:
The salary rate for this position is $60,000
