The Financial Aid Senior Advisor develops a thorough knowledge of federal, state, and institutional financial aid topics to counsel students and parents about receiving financial aid at DU. The Financial Aid Senior Advisor provides professional advising service and may supervise student employees. When requested the Financial Aid Senior Advisor evaluates and assesses documented changes in financial circumstances that occur in a student's family during the course of an academic year and exercises professional judgment in making adjustments to data elements in the formula that determines the student’s ability to pay. The Financial Aid Senior Advisor is also instrumental in the development of financial aid programs, including event planning, and the creation/updating of office policy and procedures associated with programs in which they are involved.
Provides professional advising services:
- The Financial Aid Senior Advisor works with prospective students and their families, continuing students, and members of the University of Denver community in a personalized way on the financial aid application process, eligibility, need analysis, awards, disbursement, federal/state institutional policy, and the rights and responsibilities of receiving financial aid. The Financial Aid Senior Advisor works with DU students to craft a financial plan to make the University of Denver affordable.
- Requires a thorough knowledge of financial aid topics including: cost of attendance, federal and institutional need analysis, award package, types of aid offered, how to apply for outside scholarships, receiving outside resources, payment options, financing options, selecting a lender, completing loan applications, loan certification, billing, disbursement dates, reapplying for aid, withdrawal, stop-out, re-admit, timelines/deadlines, financial aid policy and procedures, and the responsibilities of receiving financial aid.
- Routinely deals with problems and issues of a highly sensitive financial and personal nature, and therefore must exhibit independent judgment, tact and diplomacy, maintain strict confidentiality, and adhere to data sharing regulations.
- All Financial Aid Advisors, including senior level, are catalysts in supporting students with the financial aid process through various channels, including in person, email, and on the phones. Financial Aid Advisors are expected to support the front desk overflow, including incoming document management.
Determining financial aid eligibility:
- Assesses a family's ability to pay for education expenses by evaluating income and assets reported on the FAFSA, CSS PROFILE, federal tax returns, W-2s and other financial documents. The Financial Aid Senior Advisor is an expert in the area of need analysis, both federal and institutional methodologies, and must be able to explain complex financial aid calculations and the results and rationale behind financial aid awarding in a simple and easy to understand manner to students and parents. The Financial Aid Senior Advisor is routinely responsible for reviewing current financial circumstances of DU families and applying professional judgment for special circumstances appeal cases for which they are assigned.
Ensuring compliance with institutional, state, and federal aid policies:
- Problem solving for aid applicants include resolving FAFSA comment codes and rejects, verification and file review, packaging aid revisions, adjusting student budgets, correcting over awards, monitoring students on satisfactory academic progress (SAP).
- Participates in the development of existing or new financial aid and other campus based programs associated with funding educational expenses to serve students from specific populations. Assigned responsibilities require considerable planning and coordination, including adhering to federal, state, and institutional policies, while providing advisement from the financial aid perspective.
- Provide in-house trainings or inform Office of Financial Aid staff of the statuses of existing or new financial aid and other campus based programs associated with funding educational expenses to serve students from specific populations.
- Conduct research on matters of financial aid compliance or data to contribute to decision-making processes in the office.
- Emphasis on Policy and Procedure writing and implementation
Continuous Professional Development:
- The Financial Aid Senior Advisor must actively keep up to date on state and federal regulations and internal policies and procedures in order to ensure accurate and efficient interpretation of information and to ensure program compliance. The Financial Aid Senior Advisor must be able to handle numerous complex tasks with attention to detail in a fast-paced environment. The Financial Aid Advisor works as a team member with the other Financial Aid Advisors to deliver high quality service to students and their families.
Other duties as assigned
Some weeknight/weekend and holiday work is required. The Advisor will travel to present and/or attend financial aid workshops and conferences. Other duties may be assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Expert knowledge of financial aid processes, guidelines, and procedures
- Demonstrated strong skills in conflict resolution, verbal and written communication, time management, coordination and event planning, and human relations
- The position requires proficiency with standard MS Office software applications
- Proficiency with SCT Banner or similar financial aid software
- The Financial Aid Senior Advisor will be treated as a professional and is expected to act accordingly. - Bachelor’s Degree
- 3 years experience working in financial aid;
- 2 years may be substituted for with financial or related experience
- 2 years may be substituted for with a Master’s degree
Preferred Education and Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree
- Experience with CSS Profile, expertise in federal and institutional need analysis, the ability to interpret and analyze income and assets, and knowledge of professional judgment techniques is preferred.
- Ability to resolve data integrity issues in and discrepancies within Banner is preferred
- Event planning and public speaking experience
- Monday-Friday 8am-4:30pm
- Evenings and weekends as required
