Housing and Residential Education (HRE) at the University of Denver (DU) is a multifaceted department supporting 2,700+ residential students fulfilling a two-year live-on requirement. Position Summary

Resident Directors (RDs) are full-time, masters level professionals who provide a holistic approach to working with students and staff and play a critical role in shaping the student experience at DU. With oversight of a residential community and development of graduate and student staff, RDs must have the ability to think critically and identify potential issues before they arise. Additionally, RDs are leaders on the Housing and Residential Education team. They provide leadership to annual processes and work collaboratively with colleagues both in and outside of HRE. RDs demonstrate enthusiasm, agility, and the ability to thrive in an atmosphere of constant change. The RD position is a 12-month, live-off position with the option to rent an on-campus apartment. RDs are under the supervision of the Associate Director of Residential Education.

Essential Functions

  • Manage a residence hall/residential area of 350-850 students including first-year, second-year, and upper-level communities
    Select, train, supervise, lead, evaluate and develop up to two Graduate Resident Directors and up to 26 Resident Assistants
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion within all aspects of the position through ongoing development and learning
  • Work with diverse individuals and groups of students and staff including but not limited to non-traditionally aged, gender diverse, religiously diverse, international, persons with disabilities, gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, and transgender, persons of color, and varying socio-economic status
  • Assess the community to meet the changing needs of the student population and translate HREs vision into measureable goals for the building team
  • Mentor and advise a diverse student population related to personal and academic success including individual assistance to support students of concern
  • Implement the holistic student development model through the creation and implementation of a variety of educational programming
  • Act as a team player and leader who actively demonstrates a productive attitude who can work well autonomously and with teams of varying sizes
  • Adjudicate student conduct hearings involving violations of the Guide to Residence Living, the Student Code of Conduct, and the Housing Contract
  • Implement housing operations procedures to facilitate successful move-in/move-out, occupancy and room change events as well as follow up on maintenance and custodial needs
  • Financial oversight in the development and tracking of program budgets including but not limited to purchasing card transactions and reimbursements; ensure spending aligns with HRE values
  • Manage crisis situations in both assigned community and as a part of a larger university response
  • Serve in a rotation of senior administrators on-call during weekends and holidays, in addition to some scheduled work days during weekends and holidays.
  • Participate as a leader and team member on a variety of committees and initiatives as assigned.
  • Active participation in giving and receiving feedback on an on-going basis to members at all levels of the department.
  • Support Living and Learning Communities and/or Themed Communities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree completed by July 1, 2020
  • Experience in residential education

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supervising student staff
  • Experience with on-call responsibilities
  • 1-3 years experience in Residential Education

Working Environment

1. Standard office environment.
2. Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high.
3. Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

1. Required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. with some weekends, evenings, holidays, and on-call 30 minute response time.

Salary Range:
Salary will be determined by the qualifications of the selected candidate balanced with departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.
