The University of Denver offers programs in nine modern languages, including majors in French, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish, minors in those languages plus Chinese, Hebrew, Japanese, and Latin, and electives in Arabic and classical Greek.

Incorporating music, poetry, short stories, media and movies, the Hebrew Minor introduces students to Hebrew at various levels of the languages while enriching their exploration of Israels pluralist mosaic. The minor is particularly invaluable to research of the Middle East and its politics, economics, technology, journalism, religion, peace, migration and international studies as well as other fields of study. In addition to the Hebrew minor, the program also collaborates with the Center for Judaic Studies to offer a minor in Judaic Studies with a Hebrew emphasis.

Position Summary

The University of Denver seeks a full-time, appointed Hebrew teaching assistant or associate professor, to teach introductory, intermediate, and advanced four-skills Hebrew language sequences [first-year, second-year, and limited third year], as well as two related humanities courses. The non-tenure track appointment with full benefits will take effect 1 September 2020, and is renewable with the possibility of promotion. Course load is eight (8) courses per year in a quarter calendar. Other responsibilities include: undergraduate placement and proficiency exams, working across University programs and departments.

Essential Functions

TEACHING
Teaching load is eight classes over three academic quarters, focusing primarily on first- and second-year language courses, and contributing two (2) thematic humanities classes annually.

SERVICE
Active collaboration with Center for Judaic Studies and the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures program faculty.
Participation in program promotional activities outside the classroom.

RESEARCH/SCHOLARSHIP
Active scholarship is desirable and supported, though it is not a job requirement for this position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated excellence and effectiveness in teaching Hebrew language to students at the college or university level.
  • Experience and demonstrated ability to work effectively with underserved populations.

Required Qualifications

For Teaching Assistant Professor:

  • M.A. or equivalent in field relevant to Hebrew language pedagogy.
  • Record of excellence and effectiveness teaching Hebrew language (as teacher of record) to students at the college or university level for 1-3 years.
  • Native or near-native proficiency in Hebrew and English.
  • Ability to teach in some area of Israeli cultures and society.
  • Experience or commitment to Inclusive Excellence teaching methods and/or pedagogies to engage diverse student populations.

For Teaching Associate Professor:

  • M.A. or equivalent in field relevant to Hebrew language pedagogy.
  • Record of excellence and effectiveness teaching Hebrew language (as teacher of record) to students at the college or university level for 3 or more years.
  • Native or near-native proficiency in Hebrew and English.
  • Ability to teach in some area of Israeli cultures and society
  • Experience or commitment to Inclusive Excellence teaching methods and/or pedagogies to engage diverse student populations.
  • Presents evidence of a commitment to quality professional development

Preferred Qualifications

For Teaching Assistant Professor:

  • Record of excellence and effectiveness teaching Hebrew language (as teacher of record) to students at the college or university level for 3 or more years.
  • Evidence of successful teaching in some area of Israeli cultures and society.
  • Ability to teach third-year Hebrew.
  • Experience and accomplishments in active support of diversity and inclusiveness.
  • Familiarity with ACTFL standards-based teaching and assessment.

For Teaching Associate Professor:

  • Record of excellence and effectiveness teaching Hebrew language (as teacher of record) to students at the college or university level for 5 or more years.
  • Evidence of successful teaching in some area of Israeli cultures and society.
  • Ability to teach third-year Hebrew.
  • Experience and accomplishments in active support of diversity and inclusiveness.
  • Familiarity with ACTFL standards-based teaching and assessment.
  • Presents evidence of undertaking quality professional development.
