DU has established a newly formed undergraduate language program offering nine world languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian, and Spanish. Housed in the Center for World Languages and Cultures at the University of Denver, the program plays an integral role in the first-year experience by providing the coursework for the Common Curriculum Language Requirement. After completion of the first-year sequence, students move on to the Department of Languages, Literatures & Cultures and the Department of Spanish Language, Literary & Cultural Studies to continue their language study.

Position Summary

The Center for World Languages and Cultures will hire a Visiting Teaching Assistant Professor of Spanish for appointment to begin September 1, 2020. This is a non-tenure track position with full benefits and a 9-month contract. The position may be renewed for an additional year, contingent on program need and funding. The successful candidate will contribute to diversity and Inclusive Excellence through their teaching and service.

Essential Functions


  • Teach first-year Spanish courses (three levels on the quarter system).
  • Annual teaching load is eight classes on a quarter calendar.


  • Participation in program meetings and committees.
  • Participation in program promotional activities outside the classroom.
  • Some opportunities for participation in service outside of the program.


  • Active scholarship that relates directly to ones teaching is encouraged but not required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated experience interacting with diverse communities or evidence of a commitment to incorporate inclusive teaching methods and/or pedagogies to effectively engage broadly diverse student populations.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Spanish, Second Language Acquisition and Teaching, Curriculum and Instruction, Linguistics or related field.
  • Native or near-native proficiency in Spanish and English.
  • Experience teaching Spanish language and culture to undergraduate students in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctorate in Spanish, Second Language Acquisition and Teaching, Curriculum and Instruction, Linguistics or related field.
  • Extended linguistic and cultural immersion experience.
  • Demonstrated experience and accomplishments in active support of diversity and inclusiveness.
  • Experience with blended and online teaching modalities.

Salary Range
Salary will be determined by the qualifications of the selected candidate balanced with departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.
