The mission of the University of Denver Health and Counseling Center (HCC) is to provide exceptional, inclusive, integrated health care. We promote student success and wellness through education, advocacy and outreach to the University of Denver community. The HCC is an on-campus health facility open 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Monday through Friday with evening hours until 7:00 pm a minimum of 2 days per week during the academic year.  This position requires regular evening and occasional early morning work.  The HCC provides a wide range of on-site medical and mental health services.  This job requires periodic early hour and evening work.  Physicians, nurses, psychologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other professionals staff the HCC.  This position reports to the Medical Director of the HCC and performs duties under the direction of the Medical Director, Medical Practice Manager, and Executive Director of the HCC.

Position Summary

This position is a 0.6 FTE, schedule to be determined, benefitted position responsible for delivering ongoing primary health care to University of Denver students.  The mission of the University of Denver Health and Counseling Center (HCC) is to enhance overall student well-being and success through inclusive physical and mental healthcare, prevention, education, advocacy, and recovery support services.  The HCC is an on-campus health facility providing a wide range of on-site and telehealth medical and mental health services and is seeking an astute clinician who is familiar with the healthcare needs of college students and the experience to function independently and collaboratively with HCC staff.  The ideal candidate should be familiar and comfortable with incorporating the values of equity, diversity, and inclusion into their daily work.  Physicians, nurses, psychologists, physician assistants, and other professionals staff the HCC.  This position reports to the Medical Director of the HCC and performs duties under the direction of the Medical Director, Associate Director of Medical Services, and Executive Director of the HCC.

Essential Functions

  • Provide general and preventive medical care (both in-person and via telehealth), diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret lab/radiology tests, seek appropriate consultation when needed and prescribe medicine/treatments.
  • Provide urgent care including sports medicine and minor trauma, women’s health and gynecology services.
  • Arrange appropriate timely referrals for specialty care as needed with proper follow-up. 
  • Maintain accurate, thorough, and clear patient medical records in a timely manner according to HCC policies and procedures which justify diagnoses, treatments, and billing codes.  
  • Order/perform CLIA waived laboratory tests, obtain necessary samples for laboratory testing, including the performance of pap smears and wet mounts when indicated.
  • Perform duties in a cost-effective manner, striving to avoid wasting resources without jeopardizing quality of care and service.
  • Maintains competency and enhances professional growth and development through continuing education activities.  Shares knowledge gained through continuing education with staff.
  • Interacts with patients, visitors, and HCC staff in a courteous manner, and demonstrates a sincere initiative in meeting patient needs. Ensures confidentiality of patient and institutional material.  Places appropriate forms to be scanned in the electronic medical record according to the nature of the patient visit.
  • Supports and upholds clinic policies, objectives, quality improvement, safety, environmental and infection control procedures, and codes and requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies.
  • Maintains positive behaviors, approaches, attitudes, and a commitment to interpersonal service towards patients, visitors, and co-workers.
  • Assists in developing and meeting goals for the HCC as a whole, ensures that the department meets HCC goals, and assists in health promotion activities on campus.
  • Assist in policy-making, quality improvement, updating and implementing protocols as they pertain to health care delivery.
  • Communicate effectively and compassionately with students' parents, professors, etc., as requested with the proper authorization.
  • Serves as a staff resource for patient care information, responds to and intervenes, as necessary, to resolve patient problems and serves as patient advocate.
  • Performs in-person and telehealth triage and gives medical advice according to education, training, and Health Center guidelines and protocols.
  • Physician Assistants will work under the supervision of HCC physicians. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellence in interpersonal, written, and verbal communication with an ability to function independently and show initiative in managing multidisciplinary/interdepartmental personnel and situations.
  • Strong and proven skills in patient history taking; physical examination, including gynecology; diagnosis; and treatment with a high technical and professional competence.
  • Appreciation for, knowledge and application of the preventive aspects of health care.  
  • A broad perspective, maturity, proficient information gathering, and discretion.
  • The ability to operate a wide variety of medical equipment, as well as a personal computer, fax machine, and photocopier.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and work flow management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate the concepts of diversity, equity, and inclusion into daily clinical and administrative tasks.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with various students, coworkers, and departments with a positive attitude and to adapt to change with equanimity.

Required Qualifications

  • NP or PA certificate from an accredited certifying organization and completion of all NP/PA coursework and clinical clerkships from an accredited program.
  • 3 years of experience in an ambulatory care setting.
  • Appropriate medical credentials including Colorado RN/Advanced Practice Nurse license or Colorado Physician Assistant certificate, DEA registration/full prescriptive authority, NPI number.
  • Experience with the health problems of young adults and women’s health care.
  • Eligible to obtain adequate professional liability insurance coverage.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5 years of experience in an ambulatory care setting.
  • Experience in a college health environment.

Work Schedule
Part-time, Typically M-F 8am - 5pm with up to two evenings per week until 7pm during the academic year.

Salary Range
The salary range for the position is $55,200 - $63,000.
