For more than 35 years, the University of Denver Graduate Tax Program has been known as the premier tax education program in the country. Graduates of accredited law schools successfully completing the program receive the degree LL.M. in Taxation. All other candidates receive the degree Master of Taxation (M.T.) A dual degree program is also available, where a University of Denver law student may pursue the J.D. and LL.M. in taxation concurrently. Currently the Program consists of four full-time faculty, several adjunct faculty, and approximately 100 students. About half of the students attend full-time, with the other half attending part-time on campus or on-line.

Position Summary

The University of Denver Sturm College of Law is seeking a Qualified Tax Expert (QTE) to fill a position as a Visiting Assistant Professor of the Practice of Taxation, for a 12-month period, to begin as soon as possible, with potential for annual renewal for up to three years. The successful candidate will work with the Director and other faculty in the Graduate Tax Program in implementing the Low Income Tax Program (LITC). This includes development of a training program, supervising and teaching students, assisting students with resolving complex issues with the IRS on behalf of clients, and assisting the LITC Director with administering all details related to the LITC grant.

Essential Functions

  • Devising and implementing a strategy and program of instruction to train qualified students of the GTP or Sturm College of Law JD program to provide assistance to clients of the University of Denver Low Income Taxpayer Clinic.
  • Delivering effective and timely training to all students working in the Clinic to affect the Clinics capability to deliver effective representation to taxpayers who seek its assistance in dealing with controversies with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and Colorado Department of Revenue.
  • Supervising all students participating in the Clinic. In such capacity, the individual will appear in Tax Court and in administrative appeal functions before the IRS as an advocate and representative of all clients of the Clinic.
  • In each representation undertaken by the Clinic, the individual shall be responsible for all technical substantive matters related to such representation and include each students assistance or participation therein.
  • Assisting the LITC Director with administering the IRS LITC grant, including regularly tracking and analyzing client data, preparing annul and interim reports and narratives, and applying for grant funding.
  • Creating and implementing fundraising strategies including other grants and donations, creating and implementing a client outreach strategy, creating and implementing a volunteer development strategy, participating in the LITC conference and LITC workgroups.
  • Other duties may include administrative tasks, attending functions as a representative of the GTP and Clinic, designing and delivering outreach efforts to promote or educate the public regarding the Clinics operations or objectives, assisting with reporting of Clinics activities to the GTP Director.
  • Teaching seminar classes on tax controversy topics to students enrolled in the Low Income Taxpayer Clinic.
  • Participating in GTP or law school tasks or governance, as requested.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Required Qualifications

  • J.D.
  • LL.M. in Taxation.
  • Experience handling tax controversy matters with the IRS.
  • U.S. Tax Court Bar Admission (or ability to obtain prior to academic year).
  • Bar Admission (or ability to obtain prior to academic year).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three years practice in the field of Taxation.
  • At least one years teaching experience, particularly in clinical settings, in a graduate school or equivalent environment.

Salary Grade Number
The salary grade for the position is UC.

Salary Range
The salary range for this position is $56,000 - $60,000.

The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
