Position Summary

Within the Capital Projects and Planning group and under the management and supervision of the University Architect, this position will provide project and planning support on a variety of campus projects. Develops and contributes to the development of planning and design, working closely under the University Architect, campus constituents, project managers, leadership, Facilities Management and design consultants and contractors. Key responsibilities of the position include:

  • Support of projects in various stages of design and construction.
  • Programming and planning support for new projects.
  • Office and University Architect support.
  • University design standards and project close out support.

Essential Functions

Support of projects in various stages of design and construction

  • Key member of the Office of the University Architect, provide project support, serve as owner design project lead on small and medium projects to include full responsibility for managing all aspects of multiple small to midsize design or consultant efforts.
  • Capability equivalent to an Associate Level Architect for a typical architectural firm.
  • Provide design support for small projects working directly with campus clients and university project managers to ensure the design meets University requirements and assistance is provided to the Project Manager to complete the project to the clients satisfaction.
  • Daily participation in project development and review of construction documents over project duration.
  • Provide design and construction administration owner-level support for large capital projects in various stages of design and construction.
  • Position will be expected to fully understand construction estimating and knowledge of design and construction contracts.
  • Knowledge of the University goals, integration of the projects associated constituencies is necessary for successful project outcomes.
  • This position works with multiple levels at the institution and external to the institution (University and Campus administration, academic and research leaders, Local Government consultants, Deans and Vice Chancellors).
  • Estimates budgets, determines scope of work, and prepares proposals and contracts under the supervision of University Architect.
  • Actively manages project budgets, schedules, and programs; project communications and documentation; office administrative tasks; and project team assignments.

Programming and planning support for new projects

  • Development of support materials needed for fundraising and donor involvement.
  • Support of campus Master Planning efforts Support Master Planning efforts: 
    • Performs professional work related to a variety of planning assignments, including space and site planning, programing, feasibility analysis, development alternatives and analysis on the campus and university properties, as required. Makes recommendations to integrate into master plan, strategic plan, and facilities planning issues.
    • Develops and contributes to complex planning studies and programing for short, mid and long-term planning for space, site, facilities, transportation, capital projects, landscape, and infrastructure projects. Collects and applies data for planning related to long-term campus changes. Assist in the development, updates and compliance with campus and space planning principles and policies.
    • Works with University departments and personnel to strategize, plan, and implement major facilities programs and projects.

Office support

  • As needed drafting, model making, sketching to support University Architect.
  • General office work for support of the university architects and supporting equipment.
  • Provide occasional support on design oversight of large projects.

University design standards and project close out support

  • Support in development of new University design standards.
  • Work with consultant selected to support DU in finalizing standards.
  • Support newly submitted project requests.
  • Review of as-built documentation submissions and conformance to standards.
  • Integral member of close out process and documentation/filing of close out documents in accordance with University requirements.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to develop project estimates and track project budgets for a wide variety of project types (small renovations, landscape, civil, new building, etc).
  • Demonstrated ability to establish credibility and maintain effective and collaborative relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of City and County of Denver, State of Colorado, applicable Federal and other local codes pertaining to design and construction and ability to provide technical advice based on sound understanding of construction principles and practice.
  • Proficiency with Revit, AutoCAD, BIM.
  • Language Skills: Strong interpersonal communication and customer service skills. The ability to communicate both verbally and in written form with clients including Deans, Directors, and Faculty is critical to the successful development of the University's construction projects.
  • Mathematical Skills: Knowledge of geometry and algebra is required. Ability to apply concepts and analyze relevant data as it related to cost proposals, cost/SF estimating and evaluation.
  • Reasoning Ability: Multidimensional reasoning coupled with detailed analytical understanding of interrelated variables is required.
    Other skills and Abilities: Self-motivation and demonstrated dedication to the project and processes. Skills in Database Knowledge. Ability to work well in a dynamic & open office environment.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in architecture, environmental design, or related field of study.
  • 4 years of professional experience in architecture, planning, or related field with one year working on institutional projects, preferably with higher education or a similar institutional setting.
  • Current, valid licensure as an Architect in the United States.
  • Demonstrated experience in programming, feasibility studies, design phases, & construction administration.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Architecture, Planning, or related field of study.
  • Lead $5M or greater design and construction project.
  • 2 years of experience working with a facilities projects and planning department, preferably in higher education or a similar institutional setting.
  • Current, valid licensure as an Architect by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects; Current, active certification by American Planning Association (AICP) or current licensure/certification in related field.
  • Experience in facilitation of design processes and projects with participation from diverse communities.
  • Thorough understanding of current and emerging best practices for sustainability in all aspects of site and building applications, including those of LEED and USGBC. LEED AP Certification desired.
  • Experience on a variety of project delivery types and different design and construction contracts: CMGC, design build, design bid build, integrated project delivery.
  • Knowledge of key industry trends and developments.
  • Skills and ability to be creative and work on projects independently or as a member of a project team.
  • Knowledge or experience with sketch-up, GIS, or space management software.

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Salary Grade Number
The salary grade for the position is 14.

Salary Range
The salary range for this position is $95,000 - $105,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting.  The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range.  The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
