The Housing and Residential Education staff at the University of Denver provides housing and support services for 2900+ students living within University housing. The Associate Director (AD) position is a full-time, live off professional staff member who plays an integral role in creating a residential life program that encourages student and community engagement. This leadership role within Housing and Residential Education, is also responsible for the development of a supportive living and learning environment. The Associate Director plays a significant role in furthering the mission of the University of Denver, the strategic initiatives of the Division of Student Affairs and Inclusive Excellence and the mission, vision, and core values of Housing and Residential Education. This position performs a variety of important daily operations including supervision of professional staff, adjudicating conduct cases, managing and providing oversight for multiple budgets, supporting residential operations, providing leadership for department committees, and serving on divisional and University committees or task forces.

The Associate Director will help achieve these goals through effective programming, advising, supervision, training, positive role-modeling, and hands on involvement.

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Associate Director has primary oversight of the Community and Staff development in the Residence Halls and Apartments. The Associate Director is responsible for the direct supervision, training, and evaluation of Resident Directors (RD) and the indirect supervision, training, and evaluation of Graduate Resident Directors (GRD), and student staff (Senior Resident Assistants, Resident Assistants, Desk Assistants). In addition to the essential duties listed, the AD provides overall vision and leadership in the development of a robust academic and social environment for residents, while creating and maintaining a high level of safety, security, and well-being for all residents.

Essential Functions

Community Development

  • Supervise, train, & evaluate staff.
  • Track, assess, & evaluate programming initiatives.
  • Coordinate HREs diversity, equity, & Inclusion programming, education, and initiatives.
  • Develop, implement, & assess HREs 4D Student Experience initiatives.
  • Manage & coordinate large-scale events.
  • Liaison with campus partners such as Office of Student Engagement, Living & Learning.
  • Communities, Conference & Event Services, Intermural & Club Sports, New Student & Family, Program, and DU Programming Board.
  • Coordinate & Supervise the mission, development & advisement of Student Leadership in HRE communities.
  • Provide advice, support, assistance, conflict mediation, crisis intervention, and referrals to all HRE staff and residents.
  • Promote and develop social justice through daily practices, policies, programming initiatives and community building.
  • Promote safety and security awareness in the residence halls through educational programming.

Staff Development

  • Responsible for recruitment and selection processes for staff.
  • Responsible for monthly & year-round training sessions & professional development sessions for HRE Staff.
  • Assist in HREs mission, vision, core values, inclusion statement and strategic plan.
  • Assess staff job descriptions, expectations, requirements, and contracts/agreements.
  • Develop standards, guidelines and procedures for HRE On-Call Manual.
  • Provide oversight for all crisis management and responses within HRE; serve on the campus CIRT and CARE teams.
  • Serve as the liaison with the Office of Equal Opportunity & Title IX.

Staff Training and Supervision

  • Supervise and evaluate Resident Directors.
  • Indirectly supervise and evaluate GRD and student staff.
  • Provide staff direction, support, and professional development.
  • Attend regularly scheduled one on one meetings with direct reports.
  • Support SRR Administrative staff with performance concerns.
  • Create a supportive environment for professional and personal development.

Administrative Functions

  • Develop a working knowledge of all HRE operations.
  • Maintain an accessible work schedule for staff and students; including availability for periodic night and weekend commitments.
  • Demonstrate effective communication, planning, and organizational skills.
  • Perform administrative tasks associated with hall closing and opening; participate in check-in/out.
  • Facilitate & foster positive working relationships with other DU departments.
  • Maintain office management information and supplies.

Student Rights Responsibilities (SRR)

  • Support SRR with administration and enforcement of HRE and DU policies and procedures.
  • Serve as a High-Level Case Resolution Officer and appellate for violations University Policies in accordance with SRR.

Duty Responsibilities

  • Participate in a 24/7 Senior Administrator on-call duty and emergency response system for the entire DU residential population.
  • Serve as a resource to all RDs, GRDs, and Student Staff.
  • Follow duty procedures, respond to emergency/crisis calls, and assist in crisis management.
  • Keep the Executive Director for HRE informed of life-threatening emergencies or serious disruptions that may require campus intervention or follow-up.
  • Notify appropriate staff members regarding situations that impact the residence halls and/or students in the residence halls.
  • Complete reports in the student behavioral database system.

Budgeting Functions

  • Manage, track, and reconcile all assigned budgets; maintaining accurate records.
  • Track and approve all financial reconciliation and expenses by staff and student leaders.

Departmental Duties

  • Attend, participate, and serve  on HRE, Divisional, & University committees, task forces, or meetings.
  • Attend regularly scheduled one on one supervisory meetings with the Executive Director.
  • Attend events and programs sponsored by students, the department and/or the Division of Student Affairs and Inclusive Excellence, including those that periodically occur on weekends and evenings.

Other duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of legal issues and risk management practices.
  • Understanding regarding Housing operations, processes, front desk operations, FSL housing
    considerations, and facilities.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree.
  • Demonstrated record of building teams and collaborative partnerships with colleagues and key stakeholder groups.
  • Experience designing programs and trainings for and with diverse student and employee populations, and a demonstrated commitment to equity and social justice.
  • Strong leadership experience.
  • Strong operational experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Four years of work experience within residence life, supervisory experience, community programming development experiences.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability and ability to work effectively with staff and students.

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Salary Grade Number
The salary grade for the position is 10.

Salary Range
The salary range for this position is $58,000 - $63,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
