The Housing and Residential Education staff at the University of Denver (DU) provides housing and support services for 2900+ students living within University housing. The Resident Director (RD) is a full-time, live-in professional staff member who plays an integral role in creating a residential community that encourages student and community engagement. RD's are expected to incorporate the mission, vision, and core values of Housing and Residential Education into their work while at DU. This position performs a variety of important daily operations including supervision of student staff, Graduate Resident Director (GRD), advising of student leadership, adjudicating conduct cases, managing their community's budget, supporting front desk operations, facilities, and occupancy, and serving on departmental and University-wide committees.
Housing and Residential Education strives for a community that supports academic achievement and success, personal growth and development, a respectful and inclusive environment which promotes diversity, promotes community service, and fosters leadership development and an engaged staff and student. The RD will help achieve these goals through effective programming, advising, supervision, positive role-modeling, and hands on involvement.
Under the supervision of an Associate Director, the RD is responsible for the direct supervision, training, and evaluation of a Graduate Resident Director and 15-30 student staff (Senior Resident Assistants, Resident Assistants, Desk Assistants). The RD is responsible for advising their community's residential student leadership opportunities. In addition to the essential duties listed, the RD provides leadership in the development of a robust academic and social environment for residents, while creating and maintaining a high level of safety, security, and well-being for all students. This is a 12 month, live-on position. This posting may be used to fill multiple openings.
Staff Training, Supervision, and Development
- Supervise, train, & evaluate 15-30 student staff and a Graduate Resident Director (GRD).
- Actively participate staff training during Fall (July/August), Winter (December/January), Spring (March/April), and throughout the year.
- Provide staff direction, support, & professional development during weekly staff meetings and one-on-one meetings.
- Create a supportive environment that promotes professional and personal development.
- Develop a working knowledge of HRE operations.
- Manage the day-to-day operations of a housing community of 400-750 students.
- Maintain accurate budgetary records, including funds for programming & office supplies.
- Maintain an accessible work schedule for students and staff; including availability for periodic evening and weekend commitments.
- Demonstrate effective communication, planning, and organizational skills.
- Assess assigned building(s) weekly to identify any environmental and safety conditions.
- Perform administrative tasks associated with hall closing and opening; including check-in/out.
- Facilitate positive working relationships with other DU departments.
- Maintain office management information and supplies.
- Maintain community rosters and have accurate knowledge of hall vacancies.
- Manage front desk operations.
Student Conduct Responsibilities
- Administer and enforce all University policies and procedures.
- Serve as a Case Resolution Officer and adjudicate alleged violations of University Policy; including follow-up and assigning educational Outcomes.
- Serve on the Student Accountability Board.
- Serve as Administrator On-Call (AOC) for evening and 24-hour weekend/holiday duty rotation while being within the duty perimeter. HRE duty mobile phone is provided.
- Follow duty procedures, respond to emergency/crisis calls and assist in crisis management.
- Keep the Senior Administrator On-Call (SAOC) informed of emergencies or serious disruptions that may require intervention or follow-up.
- Notify appropriate staff members regarding situations that impact the residence halls and/or students in the residence halls.
- Complete reports in the student behavioral database system.
- Attend and participate in HRE, Divisional, and University meetings and task forces.
- Attend regularly scheduled one on one supervisory meetings with Supervisor.
- Assist in the recruitment and selection of Graduate Resident Directors and student staff.
- Assist in the departmental training of student staff members.
- Develop working relationships with key campus partners, including but not limited to: Department of Campus Safety, Student Rights and Responsibilities, Office of the Vice Chancellor, Office of Student Engagement, Fraternity and Sorority Life, Parent and Family Programs, Health and Counseling Center, Student Outreach and Support, and other University related services.
- Attend events and programs sponsored by HRE and/or the Division of SAIE, including those that periodically occur on weekends and evenings.
Programming and Community Building
- Serve as primary advisor or co-advisor (with GRD) of Student Leadership opportunities.
- Develop a housing community that promotes diversity, equity, and inclusive practices.
- Assist with the implementation of community engagement model including the University 4-D Student Experience.
- Attend programs, meetings, and activities offered by student staff and hall student leadership.
- Serve as a programming resource for staff and students, providing information about the campus and community contacts.
- Promote safety and security awareness in the assigned hall(s) through educational programming.
- Incorporate student development theory and knowledge into daily practices and decision-making.
- Be available for referral and counseling needs, conflict mediation, crisis intervention and appropriate follow-up.
- Serve as a referral agent to other departments.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Foster an atmosphere in the residence halls that supports the departmental, division and University missions.
- Advancing social justice through daily practices and policies as well as through programming initiatives and community building.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Understanding and appreciation for assessment.
- Strong communication and interpersonal competencies that demonstrate intelligence and integrity, and a commitment to exemplary customer service and sustainability.
- Knowledge of relevant federal and state laws.
- Knowledge of legal issues and risk management practices.
- Understanding regarding Housing operations, processes, front desk operations, and facilities.
- Master's degree.
- Demonstrated record of building teams and collaborative partnerships with colleagues and key stakeholder groups.
- Experience designing programs for and with diverse student and employee populations, and a demonstrated commitment to equity and social justice.
- Two years of post-Master work experience within residence life and housing as well as someone who has demonstrated leadership ability and ability to work effectively with staff and students.
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. with some nights, weekends, and holidays.

Salary Grade Number
The salary grade for the position is 7.
The salary range for this position is $45,000 - $50,000.
The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting.
