The Department of Religious Studies at the University of Denver is a vibrant department of eight productive, nationally recognized scholar‐teachers who attract undergraduate majors and minors, double majors and graduate students in the College of Arts, Humanities, & Social Sciences (CAHSS). Our department offers BA and MA degrees in Religious Studies, and our courses also contribute to the undergraduate core curriculum, the Critical Race and Ethnic Studies minor, the Middle East Studies minor, and the Gender and Women’s Studies program. We are core contributors to the Joint Doctoral Program in the Study of Religion, which the University of Denver shares with the Iliff School of Theology. 

Position Summary

The Department of Religious Studies invites applications for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Christianity, effective September 1, 2022. The area of expertise in Christianity is open but assumes a deep knowledge of Christian texts and/or New Testament, history of interpretation and Christian history, particularly within global, cross-cultural, or comparative frameworks. Training in race and ethnic studies, gender studies and/or postcolonial/decolonial theories, and/or any other relevant critical methodologies is desirable, as are other strengths in globalized and/or historically-marginalized interpretations of Christian texts and practice, particularly those outside Europe and the United States.

Candidates should be grounded in broad theoretical issues regarding the study of religion and should be able to offer courses that are accessible and appealing to undergraduate students representing a broad range of majors with no background in religious studies. They should also be able to a teach a mix of advanced undergraduate majors. In addition, candidates ideally should also be able to offer graduate-level courses for the area of specialization of the M.A. program in Sacred Texts and Lived Religions as well as doctoral courses in Bible, Ancient Judaism and Early Christianity for the DU-Iliff Joint Doctoral Program in the Study of Religion.  Finally, candidates should have the appropriate advanced-level training in Greek and any other relevant languages or related textual expertise to be able to support and train graduate students in their area of specialization. The department is particularly interested in qualified candidates who can contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion through their teaching, research, and service. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to integrate content and issues relating to, and to work effectively with, ethnically/racially/religiously diverse populations.

A doctorate in religious studies or a relevant field is required prior to appointment. ABDs who cannot provide proof of a scheduled defense date should not apply. A candidate’s doctoral degree may be from religious studies or any relevant department with religious studies training. Please note that we are not a theology or ministry department, and that the University of Denver is a secular institution.

Essential Functions

  • Teach five courses per year over three quarters (autumn, winter, spring) that reflect the candidate’s area of specialization and are attractive to students.
  • As part of the candidate’s annual load, teach courses related to Christianity and New Testament or related subject matter that serves the University’s undergraduate core curriculum and attracts undergraduate students to Religious Studies.
  • Contribute as appropriate to the department’s MA program and to the Joint Doctoral Program in the Study of Religion, which the University of Denver shares with the Iliff School of Theology. This may include reading comprehensive exams, serving on MA and doctoral committees, and supervising theses/dissertations.
  • Work effectively with diverse populations and implement inclusive teaching and learning principles in the classroom.
  • Mentor and advise undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Serve as a good citizen within the Department of Religious Studies, the University of Denver, and the community. This includes departmental, CAHSS, and University service.
  • Maintain an active research and publication agenda.

  • Knowledge of relevant scholarly languages and textual training.
  • Knowledge of contemporary pedagogy.
  • Commitment to utilizing and engaging a diverse range of perspectives, scholars, approaches, and resources in teaching materials and practices.
  • Ability to offer courses in various aspects of Christianity that attract undergraduate students in a wide variety of majors.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and experience with culturally-responsive pedagogies aimed at engaging broadly diverse student populations.
  • Ability to contribute to our compositional and curricular diversity and to the advancement of our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through their teaching, research and service.

Required Qualifications

  • Completed Ph.D. prior to appointment (no exceptions). Degree may be from religious studies or any relevant department with religious studies training.
  • Advanced-level language training in Greek and other languages relevant to the candidate’s research specialty.
  • Theoretical training at a level appropriate to teach in a department of religious studies with both undergraduate and graduate programs.
  • Proven record of successful teaching experience during and/or after the candidate’s graduate training.
  • Strong commitment to both successful teaching and scholarship, and to working with students. 
  • A clearly defined research and publication agenda.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Rigorous theoretical training, including in approaches that de-center Euro-American readings of Christian texts, in favor of a more global and inclusive understanding of Christianity and its textual and historical origins.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is UC.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $72,000-$75,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
