The Temporary Medical Assistant position at the University of Denver Health and Counseling Center (HCC) is a non-benefitted, full-time, 5-month clinical position responsible for providing direct patient care at the HCC. This position typically works 8-hour shifts, Monday-Friday with occasional evening work. Medical assistant responsibilities include rooming patients, obtaining vital signs, phlebotomy, immunizations, CLIA waived laboratory testing, and assisting providers with procedures, exams, treatments, and various other duties as assigned. Patients will include undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Denver. This person should be familiar with medical office standards and policies and must adhere to established DU and HCC policies and protocols. This position will help manage patient flow in the clinic, assist in clinical tasks such as those listed, and function as a resource for all providers in the clinic. This position requires the knowledge and skills to perform tasks in a fast paced and supportive environment while working closely with all medical, administrative, and counseling staff. This position reports to the Associate Director of Medical Clinical Services and Medical Director of the HCC and performs duties under the direction of the Associate Director of Medical Clinical Services, Medical Director, providers, and Executive Director of the HCC.
The mission of the University of Denver Health and Counseling Center (HCC) is to provide exceptional, inclusive, integrated health care. We promote student success and wellness through education, advocacy, and outreach to the University of Denver community. The HCC is an on-campus health facility open 8am-5pm M-F with evening hours until 7pm a minimum of 2 days per week during the academic year. The HCC provides a wide range of on-site medical and mental health services. This job requires periodic early hour and regular evening work on a shifted schedule.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are customary for this position but are not to be construed as all-inclusive. Duties may be added, deleted, and assigned based on management discretion and institutional needs.
- Perform basic medical clinic tasks including rooming patients, obtaining and documentation of the patient's presenting chief complaint, vital signs, weight, height, allergies, medications, and relevant tests in the electronic record.
- Administer immunizations, help with flu shot clinics and assist with State of Colorado and DU immunization requirement procedures.
- Collect blood and body fluid samples by approved methods (venipuncture, finger stick, etc.), prepare and track specimens for testing and/or transportation to affiliate laboratory.
- Perform CLIA waived in-office laboratory tests, ECGs, nebulizer treatments, spirometry, ear lavage and other clinical procedures as assigned by treating providers.
- Assist providers with patient examination, procedures both sterile and non-sterile, and treatment anticipating providers' clinical and therapeutic needs.
- Give certain medications and injections under provider's supervision/direction and per practice protocols.
- Clean and restock examination and treatment rooms, assist with ordering and inventory of medical supplies, vaccines, medications, and equipment, dispose of contaminated supplies, clean/sterilize medical instruments.
- Assure a facility which is safe, clean, and in operable condition.
- Assist in the timely maintenance of patient records, document patient care, record lab results and other pertinent data in patient charts, use appropriate encounter templates within the electronic record.
- Record appropriate charges when applicable.
- Respond and provide assistance during emergency situations within the facility
- Upon request or as needed, perform clerical duties.
- Participate in quality improvement activities. Assist in maintaining compliance with internal and external regulatory standards.
- Maintain competency and enhance professional growth and development through continuing education activities. Share knowledge gained through continuing education with the staff.
- Perform duties in a cost-effective manner, striving to avoid wasting resources without jeopardizing quality of care and service.
- Interact with patients, visitors, and Health Center staff in a courteous manner and demonstrate a sincere initiative in meeting patient needs. Ensure confidentiality of patient and institutional material. Place appropriate forms in the electronic medical record according to the nature of the patient visit.
- Support and uphold clinic policies, objectives, quality improvement initiatives, safety, environmental, and infection control procedures and codes and requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies.
- Maintain positive behaviors, approaches, attitudes, and a commitment to interpersonal service towards patients, visitors, and co-workers.
- Assist in developing and implementing policies and procedures for HCC operations and oversee and ensure implementation.
- Assist in developing and meeting goals for the HCC as a whole, ensuring that the department meets HCC goals, and assists in health promotion activities on campus
Qualification Requirements: To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. - High School Diploma
- Completion of a formal program or certification as a Medical Assistant
- Completion of formal internship as a medical assistant in an outpatient clinical setting
- Current CPR certification
- Ability to operate a wide variety of medical equipment, as well as a personal computer, fax machine, and photocopier
- Vaccine Requirements: COVID-19, Influenza, MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis B
- 1 to 2 years’ experience in a college health center.
- 1 year experience in an outpatient clinical setting.
- Knowledge of medical office procedures, HIPAA compliance.
The hourly range for this position is $23.50.
The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
