The Leadership in the Outdoor Recreation Industry Program at the University of Denver (DU) will provide inclusive and interdisciplinary training to individuals seeking to enter the outdoor industry and those within the industry seeking to acquire advanced industry-specific knowledge. Colorado is the epicenter of the outdoor industry, making DU the perfect home for such a program. The program will be interdisciplinary in nature, with courses taught by faculty from the Daniels College of Business, the Josef Korbel School of International Studies, and the Sturm College of Law. Leveraging DU’s academic strengths in business, law, and policy will create distinctive learning experiences to prepare and elevate leaders in the outdoor industry. The program will be administratively housed in the Daniels College of Business.

The University of Denver is the oldest independent university in the Rocky Mountain Region, and is home to more than 14,000 students. DU is classified as a Doctoral/Research university with high research activity (“R1” status). The Daniels College of Business is the eighth oldest collegiate business program in the U.S. and has held AACSB accreditation since 1923.

Position Summary

The inaugural Senior Executive Director of the Leadership in Outdoor Recreation Leadership Program will be responsible for building the program, including supporting curriculum development, recruiting students and ensuring high-quality curricular and co-curricular experiences that prepare students for successful careers and leadership roles in the outdoor industry.

Essential Functions

  • Support faculty in the Daniels College of Business, the Josef Korbel School of International Studies, and the Sturm College of Law in developing coursework related to outdoor recreation leadership.
  • Establish and execute a strategy to recruit and admit students to the program, with a particular focus on students from historically underrepresented areas of the outdoor recreation industry.
  • Build partnerships with other academic institutions, especially those that serve underrepresented populations, to create pipelines of potential students.
  • Establish relationships with corporations in the outdoor recreation industry as well as with industry associations within Colorado, nationally, and globally.
  • Build and execute a B2C marketing plan for the program.
  • Coordinate with the Daniels College of Business Associate Dean of Finance and Business Operations to develop a five-year growth plan and operational budget. Be accountable for revenue achievement and cost containment. Identify opportunities for revenue enhancement.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Deep understanding of and passion for the outdoor recreation industry.
  • Ability to network with industry leaders and build relationships with volunteers.
  • Demonstrated skill in successfully recruiting and retaining students in an academic setting.
  • Ability to actively manage budgets and deadlines.
  • Ability to serve as an active and collaborative partner with faculty and staff across campus to foster strategic, effective, and collaborative educational practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including verbal, written and organizational skills.
  • Exceptional attention to details, high level of organization, and commitment to quality.
  • Model “One DU” leadership.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years’ experience in the outdoor recreation industry.
  • 10+ years’ Project Management and leadership experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in business or related discipline.
  • Demonstrated record of success in creating and successfully executing new initiatives.
  • Passion for the outdoors.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 10+ years’ experience in the outdoor recreation industry.
  • Experience in an academic or non-profit setting.
  • Experience with recruiting students in an educational environment.
  • Master’s degree or higher in business or related field.

Working Environment

1. Standard office environment.
2. Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high.
3. Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

1. Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period of time.
2. Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 17.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $163,900-$206,500.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
