About the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics

The college is home to five academic departments: Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Geography and the Environment, Mathematics, and Physics and Astronomy. About Biological Sciences

The Department of Biological Sciences focuses on three areas of research and teaching; 1) Cell and Molecular Biology – including biophysics, neuroscience, cell signaling, and developmental biology, and 2) Ecology, Biodiversity – including behavioral ecology, plant-insect interactions, conservation biology, restoration ecology, and evolution and 3) Physiology of Health and Disease including emphasis on human physiology and exercise physiology. The department offers undergraduate majors of study including Biology (B.A./B.S.), Molecular Biology (B.S./B.S.), Ecology, and Biodiversity (B.A./B.S.) Physiology of Health and Disease (B.S.) and Integrated Sciences (B.A.). A concentration in Cognitive Neurosciences (B.A./B.S.) is also offered in conjunction with the Department of Psychology. At the graduate level, the department offers M.S. and Ph.D. with a research emphasis in either cell and molecular biology or ecology and biodiversity. A professional science masters (PSM) is offered in Biomedical Sciences and a M.S. in Clinical Exercise Physiology.

About Pre-Health Education & Advising

Pre-Health Education & Advising provides academic and career advising for students from all majors who are interested in applying to medical, physician assistant, nursing, dental, pharmacy, physical therapy, and other health-related graduate programs. Pre-Health support starts before classes start in the freshman year and continues through all undergrad years and continues after graduation. The goal of advising is to support students in preparing for professional school and building the strongest foundation and the most competitive application/resume possible. Currently, DU has over 400 pre-health students and also a substantial number of DU alumni who continue to receive pre-health advising and guidance and assistance in applying to graduate programs.

Position Summary

The Department of Biological Sciences has an opening for a pre-health advisor. This position works with the Director of Pre-Health Education and advising to provide advising support to students pursuing careers in health and healthcare. This will involve individual advising appointments with students, helping organize advising and career sessions with students, and working with the director to help students with the application process. The position will also provide some administrative support to the director. The ideal candidate must be able to work independently under general direction and provide excellent service to faculty, students, University staff and community members under a variety of circumstances.

Essential Functions

  • Assist the Director in advising and assisting students and specialized pre-medical/pre-health student populations on all aspects of their academic experience, including progression and requirement matters for the major and School (e.g., academic probation, dismissal, Normal Progress Policy). Advise students with GPA or progress problems and recommend appropriate courses of action by the major and School.
  • Assist the Director with various data-collection or data-analysis projects. Maintain a database of current students and alumni. Monitor the success of graduates in admission to graduate and professional school programs. Annually assess the needs/trends as related to Pre-Health Advising.
  • Through in-person and/or virtual meetings, provide individual and group pre-health advising.
  • Assist, advise, and guide students through meeting both academic and career-related admissions requirements and support students through the medical and health professions school application process.
  • Provide administrative support to the director including scheduling appointments and meetings, assisting with preparation of pre-professional committee letters, and marketing and communications with DU Admissions.

  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Programs that include but limited to: Excel, Word and Outlook.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or degree in progress
  • Proficiency with MS Office with an emphasis on Word and Excel

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two or more years’ experience undergraduate advising or working with pre-health students

Working Environment

  1. Standard office environment.
  2. Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high.
  3. Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

  1. Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period of time.
  2. Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.

Work Schedule

The University’s administrative offices are open Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Work schedule may vary.

Salary Grade Number:

The salary grade for the position is 7.

Hourly Range:

The hourly range for the position is $25.54 - $29.63.

The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
