Position Summary

The Accommodation Specialist will review supporting documentation and requests for accommodations from students (i.e., undergraduate, graduate, and distance learners), rendering determinations on appropriate accommodations. They will also orient, support, and provide guidance to students and those in their support system(s) about the disability accommodations process at the University, and the appropriate use of accommodations. In addition, the specialist will assist students in the accommodations process associated with field placements, practicums, and other non-paid placement settings. This is a full-time position, 37.5 hours per week, and will report to the Assistant Director of Student Disability Services Program (SDS) and will serve as an interactive member of the SDS accommodation review team including assisting with other departments responsibilities and tasks as assigned.

Essential Functions

Accommodation Review and Approval:

  • Review and determine eligibility for accommodation from enrolled students, by working directly with students to gather additional information, provide information about the request process, and orient students to processes and procedures for approved accommodations.
  • Use a developmental approach to partner with students to understand the accommodations process, accommodations available, how to use the SDS software to notify faculty of their approved accommodation(s), and about other University resources and supports that are available and how to access them in support of their success.
  • Attend and collaborate in bi-weekly accommodation review team meetings to achieve a considered review of difficult or complex requests for accommodation and/or work to identify efficiencies and/or solutions to accommodation-related concerns.
  • Provide support for a caseload of students with a focus on students enrolled in graduate and professional programs as well as non-traditional and non-residential students.
  • Collaborate with academic departments to ensure the provision of appropriate resources for students participating in field placements, intern and externships, coops, online programs, etc.

Education and Training:

  • Attend and participate in department, Dean of Students (DOS) area, division, and University-wide professional development opportunities.
  • Participate in professional development to gain additional understanding of the Universitys obligations associated with compliance with applicable laws including but not limited to Section 504 and the ADAAA as well as updates and changes in current and emerging solutions for equitable access.

Collaboration, Training, and Outreach:

  • Collaborate with campus partners to support access for students with disabilities to University course materials, programs, and services.
  • Staff information fairs whether those be in person or virtual for prospective students, incoming and new students whether those transfer, first-year first-time undergraduate or graduate students.
  • Coordinate the review, deliberation process, and student notifications for the Housing Release Committee associated with the University Live-On requirement and requests to be released from housing contracts due to disability-related reasons.
  • Develop and conduct trainings/workshops/demonstrations for students, staff, and faculty in the areas of accessibility, and Universal Design for Learning.
  • Participate in annual SDS Orientation.
  • Facilitate workshops for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Focus on testing needs and support throughout the quarter and especially during final exams.

Outreach and Support:

  • Liaise and facilitate any meetings between the student, faculty, staff, department(s), and/or other stakeholders relating to the implementation or appropriateness of accommodations.
  • Proactively and reactively partner with students based on information provided by the Universitys behavioral intervention team,
  • Student Outreach, and Support, Academic Advising, the Learning Effectiveness Program (LEP), SDS leadership, or other members of the University community.

Other Duties as Assigned:

  • In consultation with the Director, serve on University, Divisional, and departmental committees as well as other duties assigned to support the mission of the department, division, and University.
  • May supervise, evaluate and train interns, student workers, and/or graduate students working in the SDS office. This would include coordinating with any graduate interns’ program and field experience coordinator to learn of and design work assignments that meet program goals and objectives, including direct student contact when appropriate.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to review and interpret psychoeducational evaluations and other forms of supporting documentation provided to accompany accommodation requests. This can be demonstrated through coursework, work experience, or a combination of both.
  • Demonstrated record of advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to teach and provide in-person training, workshops, and present information effectively and respond to questions from individuals (staff, faculty, students, parents, and other professionals).
  • Ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages. Ability to apply concepts and analyze relevant data such as percentage ratios and proportions to practical solutions.
  • Ability to problem solve hardware and software conflicts.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists while working within strict deadlines and providing timely responses to students, faculty, and other constituents.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a cohesive team.
  • Training in learning theory, assessment, instructional design, and Universal Design for Learning concepts

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree from an accredited institution in a relevant degree area such as Psychology, Counseling, School Counseling, Rehabilitation, Counseling, Education, Social Work, Higher Education, Special Education.
  • Two (2) years of experience working with persons with disabilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters Degree
  • Experience taking a Culturally Responsive Approach to accommodation review and development with students
  • Experience with reviewing and evaluating documentation to determine accommodations in higher education or employment setting
  • 1-year professional experience working in higher education
  • Experience with student affairs and/or student development
  • Experience supporting students with disabilities who are engaging in internships and externships, field placements, practicums, etc.
  • Experience interpreting federal laws and regulations governing the provision of services to persons with disabilities including the ADA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
  • Experience with Accommodate software or other disability accommodation tracking software and/or Banner

Working Environment

1. Standard office environment.
2. Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high.
3. Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

1. Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period of time.
2. Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. with some nights, weekends, and holidays.

In accordance with the University’s flexible work policy, this position is eligible to be considered for partial remote work. Further details regarding this plan will be determined with the hiring manager and are dependent on the division and team specific needs.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 8.

Hourly Range:
The hourly range for the position is $28.10-$29.63
