The Department of Facilities Management supports the mission of the University of Denver's physical resources in order to provide a healthy and safe educational environment for campus community through services of the departments of Capital Projects and Planning, Facilities Management, Parking & Mobility Services, Auxiliaries & Real Estate, and Business & Operations.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Mechanical, Plumbing and Electrical in the Department of Facilities Management, the Pipefitter is a non-exempt (hourly) part-time position that provides support to meet the University’s utility systems by maintaining, repairing or replacing existing equipment that has reached the end of life.
This is a non-benefited position not to exceed 1,000 hours in a calendar year.
Essential Functions
- Adheres to all Department and University policies, procedures, directives, rules, and regulations.
- Replaces worn out equipment and piping on the campus
- Repairs utility piping systems
- Creates material lists and assembles equipment for jobs
- Self-managed individual capable of making all decisions to accomplish their tasks
- May be asked to take lead on larger tasks which oversee other personnel.
- Assists in training other Facilities teammates on repair and replacement of equipment and piping
- Fabricate, assemble, and install pipes and fittings according to specifications.
- Construct various pipe joints using threading, welding techniques, soldering, brazing, and pro press.
- Collaborate with supervisor to ensure work consistency with estimates and schedules.
- Build and modify piping systems as needed.
- Collaborate with other tradespeople to ensure a smooth and efficient installation process.
- Comply with all relevant safety and building codes.
- Order and maintain accurate records of materials and labor used.
- Apply mechanical knowledge to troubleshoot and repair complex piping systems.
- Submit daily job progress reports to supervisors as required
- Responsible for ordering stock or fabricated materials as far in advance as possible either personally or through the site foreman to ensure completion of assigned tasks
- Responsible for physical job site organization and housekeeping to ensure a safe professional work area
- Responsible for safe operation and maintenance of DU equipment as well as monitoring the use and timely return of rented equipment
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to read, analyze, interpret blueprints/construction diagrams, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from internal clients, managers, or customers.
- Ability to read, analyze, interpret, and calculate basic mathematical formulas, construction cost bids, and other similar types of technical documents or governmental regulations.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, electronic, graphical, or numerical form.
- Ability to work in a team-oriented environment, requires individual thought, and initiative.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 20 years of experience in pipe fitting and millwright in the commercial and industrial industries.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado driver's license and be insurable under university guidelines.
- Must pass a complete background check to include criminal, motor vehicle report and verification of employment and education.
- Pass a pre-employment physical exam and lift 100 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications
- 30 years in the pipefitting trade.
- Steam fitting experience.
- Knowledge of rigging and moving large objects.
- Experience in repairing, maintaining and installing chilled water, heating water, steam, condensate, RO, and natural gas.
- Able to braise and solder up to 3-inch copper.
- Understand pipe material galvanic action and how to prevent it.
Work Environment
Works in mechanical rooms and buildings 90% of the time and 10% in an office environment. Unexpected interruptions occur frequently; and the stress level is moderate. The noise level is usually moderate to high.
Physical Abilities
- Moderate to strenuous physical effort is required.
- This position requires extended periods of standing, walking, using hands to handle, hold and control tools and objects, reaching with arms, stooping, kneeling or crawling.
- This job also requires pushing, pulling, lifting and carrying objects of up to 100 lbs.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Needs to identify and distinguish color.
- Should be able to wear approved OSHA respirators.
Work Schedule
20 hour work week. Schedule determined by Supervisor
