Position Summary

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Scholarly Communication & Collections Services, the Scholarly Communications Librarian leads and coordinates scholarly communication initiatives across the university community, working closely with faculty, researchers, students, and library colleagues. This work will include providing consultations and workshops on scholarly publishing, author rights, and open access. The position will deliver training for faculty and graduate students on research impact metrics and publishing strategies. It will also offer technical support for digital scholarship tools and platforms, as well as develop new services to support emerging forms of scholarly communication.

Building and maintaining relationships with key campus units, such as the Office of Institutional Research and Analysis and the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, will be essential in aligning efforts and enhancing the university's research impact. This position manages the Open Access Publishing Fund, assisting community members with their publishing and licensing choices while actively promoting open access materials and institutional repository content. The librarian actively engages in scholarly activities through research and publication and participates in professional organizations, as well as library and campus committees. Appointment will be made at the rank of Assistant Professor, non-tenure track.

Essential Functions

  • Create and implement services for scholarly communication at the University of Denver, including planning and assessing the program’s effectiveness based on institutional needs, industry standards, benchmarks, and available resources.
  • Develop policies, procedures, and submission guidelines for the institutional repository, and oversee its growth and evolution in collaboration with relevant internal and external colleagues, including encouraging deposit of materials in the repository.
  • Design and deliver instructional sessions on scholarly communication topics, such as publishing models, copyright, open access, and data management, in collaboration with colleagues.
  • Advise faculty, researchers, and students on intellectual property rights, including topics such as permissions, licensing, and publication agreements.
  • Develop resources and communication tools to educate researchers and promote scholarly communication services.
  • Collaborate with subject librarians working with faculty and students to provide support for library users in the scholarly communication process.
  • Work closely with the Collection and Content Management Librarian to integrate open access elements (such as read & publish or subscribe to open) into journal and e-book subscriptions.
  • Manage the Open Access Publishing Fund and collaborate with the Collection Development Committee to select and recommend funding open educational resource initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with other campus units aligned with scholarly communication and research, including the Office of Institutional Research and Analysis and the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.
  • Collaborate with library and university colleagues to promote open access course materials and institutional repository content.
  • Supervise one exempt staff position with responsibilities for supporting the institutional repository.
  • Work in accordance with the promotion guidelines and engage in scholarly activities through research and publication, as a library faculty member.
  • Participate and engage in service commitments with local, regional, and national professional organizations.
  • Other duties as required

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to reach out to and engage target audiences, effectively communicate in all formats, and adapt communication style to suit different audiences.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to effectively articulate complex concepts, such as copyright, fair use, author rights, and open access.
  • Ability to organize work and set priorities for yourself and provide leadership for those you supervise.
  • Knowledge of the scholarly research process and scholarly publishing practices.
  • Ability to document workflows and procedures, in order to support program development, enhance services, and share knowledge.
  • Ability to use knowledge, experience, awareness, and skills to advance DU’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, and to engage effectively with a broad spectrum of culturally diverse groups.
  • Ability to actively engage in the library organization, including leadership and participation in teams, task forces, and committees, working professionally in support of colleagues, and sharing responsibility as a faculty member in the library’s mission, goals, programs, and plans.
  • Ability to commit to the standards of professional behavior and responsibility as stated in the university’s Guidelines for Appointment, Promotion, & Tenure.

Required Qualifications

  • ALA-accredited masters degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent advanced academic qualification in information services.
  • A successful candidate will demonstrate knowledge, ability, or potential to engage effectively with culturally diverse communities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience and/or coursework related to scholarly communication topics (publishing models, open access, copyright, etc.).
  • Experience managing repository workflows, including creating policies and procedures.
  • Experience supervising, leading, training, or mentoring staff or students.
  • Demonstrated experience or potential to contribute to the profession through research, publication, and service to national and regional professional organizations.

Working Environment

The work environment is an academic library that values a diverse workforce. There are cyclical periods of increased workloads during the academic year, and attention is paid to ergonomics and safety. Library employees collaborate across a flexible hybrid and team-based organization. Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. In accordance with the University’s flexible work policy, this position is eligible to be considered for partial remote work. Further details regarding this plan will be determined with the hiring manager and are dependent on the division and team specific needs.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $68,000 - $72,000.

The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
