The Department of Campus Safety’s Community Health Crisis Supervisor Responder position exists to provide direct mental health/crisis related services to support the health safety of the DU community, its affiliates and local community members. This position initiates emergency and/or intermediate measures. including mental health assessment, intervention and support for people experiencing mental health crisis. The Responder is a specialized clinical position that serves as the mental health consultant and liaison for DU Campus Safety both internally and with campus and community partners. The Responder clinician will respond to mental health calls to provide in the moment crisis assessments, disposition planning, and follow-up care coordination. This position may also be deployed with DU Campus Safety Officers. The Responder clinician will provide crisis care and afterhours consultation to DU students, faculty, and staff seeking care as needed. The majority of this work will take place in the field, outside of a traditional office, as this position will be joining DU Campus Safety Officers for mental health-related calls/situations. These environments could include going into student's residence halls, academic buildings, sports stadiums or other areas within the university and surrounding areas. The supervisor responder clinician position will sit on the CARE team and the (faculty and staff CARE team).

Essential Functions

  • Crisis Intervention: empathic listening and validation, de-escalation, assessment of suicide/homicide danger, safety planning, efficient intervention, consultation, with consideration of other risk factors such as substance use, self-care, social support, and mental status. Crisis counseling also involves interventions such as psychiatric hospitalization and post-intervention components including follow up with individuals of concern, other impacted individuals, and campus partners as appropriate.
  • Attending training classes as directed.
  • Maintaining confidential records.
  • Provide in-person or telehealth crisis outreach, crisis de-escalation, and clinical assessment
  • Provide follow up outreach to students and identified as needed mental health support/follow up.
  • Partnering with DU Campus Safety officers during higher mental health incident shift duties and large events as a means to provide early detection and resolution of emerging mental health situations.
  • As needed provide in-person and/or telehealth interventions & assessment of current mental health status to stabilize students, faculty, or staff in crisis & determine appropriate disposition. Consider/recommend appropriate level of care and inpatient hospitalization when indicated.
  • This position will provide appropriate information to victim advocates in coordination with law enforcement as deemed necessary and when appropriate.

Collaboration/Outreach:

  • Provide formal mental health trainings for DU staff to increase confidence, awareness and effectiveness in dealing with mental health crisis situations.
  • Develop effective relationships with community mental health co­responders (STAR) to increase collaboration and partnership with neighboring law enforcement agencies.
  • Consult on campus wide messaging in conjunction with DU Campus Safety and DU as subject matter expert in mental health matters for stakeholders

Additional Elements:

  • Engage with the University's students, staff, and faculty on personal and public safety topics.
  • Partner with staff and faculty to establish and nurture relationships with university/community groups and local organizations.
  • Coordinate with the Campus Safety Advisory Board
  • Exercise sound judgment to address and resolve minor to moderate conflicts or issues when they occur.
  • Attend weekly meetings, maintain awareness of other university departments, community health providers, services, hospitals, and other resources.
  • Engage in training of DU Campus Safety officers or other department personnel in areas related to mental health as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s in counseling, psychology, social work or other related field from accredited program
  • Licensed clinical social worker, mental health counselor, marriage and family therapist, or psychologist in the state of Colorado, or must be license-eligible and attain licensure within nine months.
  • Experience supervising a team
  • Experience with crisis intervention and suicide prevention
  • Knowledge of HIPAA compliance, current statutes, rules and regulations relative to confidentiality.
  • Must have a valid driver's license
  • Must be able to work long periods of time in variable inside and outside conditions.
  • Must be willing to work as needed, including nights, weekends or holidays.
  • Must be able to make impactful, independent decisions without direct supervisory oversight.
  • Must be able to complete and maintain P1 Aid, CPR, Narcan and tourniquet training and professional certifications in personal defense required of CAPS clinicians.  

Work Schedule
37.5 hour work week, Schedule determined by Supervisor including nights, weekends or holidays.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 13.

Salary Rate:
The salary rate for this position is $85,000-$95,000.

The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
