Position Summary

The Associate Director position oversees its individual credit-bearing learning programs and non-credit-bearing language learning programs and provides programming and marketing support to the Center for World Languages and Cultures. Duties include programming non-credit courses for the CWLC, coordinating collaborative programming with other units (e.g. UColl, Korbel, INTZ), performing CWLC marketing tasks, collecting and maintaining data for all CWLC programming and testing.

The Associate Director will assist the Director in advocating for language learning, providing training and professional development opportunities to teaching and tutoring staff. The AD will also work closely with the Director on implementation and assessment/evaluation of all language programs and requirements at DU to ensure academic quality and consistency across campus. The individual in this position will work closely with the other CWLC staff members.

The position also provides general administrative support to Center for World Languages & Cultures. Duties include support for general office management, reception of visitors and answering of telephones, assisting faculty, tutors, and students with processes related to language testing.

The ideal candidate must be able to work independently under general direction, and must be able to provide excellent service to students, faculty, and staff under a variety of circumstances.

Essential Functions

General Administrative Duties

  • Answer phone and email queries related to CWLC credit bearing and non-credit bearing programs.
  • Report graduate proficiency test results to graduate advisors and students.
  • Collect CWLC assessments data and generate report for reviews.
  • Assist with report publications, helping produce newsletter, reports and other communications.
  • Support the Director and the Assistant to the Director in maintaining records in efficient and secure files, both digital and paper.
  • Work closely with CWLC team members on planning and implementation of various initiatives.
  • Serve as primary administrator of the CWLC in the absence of the Director.

Program Coordination and Support

  • Program, oversee and organize International Strategic Partner Courses and other courses and programs once they are piloted, accepted, and established at DU.
  • Assist the Director in the creation and management of special instructional programs (CLAC, Community Language Courses, & Language for Professional Courses).
  • Program, oversee, and supervise DILS/SDLS courses.
  • Recruit, interview and select Language Tutors, Language Examiners, and Language Partners.
  • Assist the Director in development/evaluation/revision of program assessments.
  • Assist the Director in developing training modules for tutors and language partners.
  • Conduct on-boarding and ongoing training for Language Center Tutors, Language Partners, Language Examiners (focus on aspects of language teaching and learning)
  • Keep up to date with recent work in second language acquisition, teaching methodologies, instructional technology, and assessment theory


  • Maintain the programs web presence, keeping website current in accordance with DU’s standards as well as representing the program faculty and staff appropriately effectively.
  • Assist the Director in developing marketing materials to advertise non-credit programs and advertise in appropriate venues.
  • Advocate for language learning by assisting the Director in developing informational material to promote language learning and the FYLP at DU and assist various advising units on campus.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Advanced proficiency in at least one language other than English.
  • Knowledge of instructional design principles and best practices, language-teaching methodologies and best practices, curriculum development, and learning outcomes.
  • Knowledge of language assessment theories, practices, and proficiency frameworks.
  • Knowledge of learning management systems (LMS) and applications for language teaching and learning.
  • Ability to problem-solve, think critically and creatively, and use independent judgment and initiative.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for dealing with and building relationships with students, faculty, community leaders, and coworkers.
  • Ability to strategically plan, set goals, and evaluate results; i.e., manage a variety of projects to completion.
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to multi-task, and work independently and responsibly; ability to organize and manage a large number of details.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with computer technology such as using the Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, Publisher, etc.
  • Ability to use video producing software (for example in Adobe Cloud)  
  • Must be able to occasionally work flexible hours.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in second language acquisition, linguistics, language, or related field
  • Formal language study
  • Teaching or training experience in a formal setting, such as, but not limited to, an academic institution, corporate training environment, or training in a non-profit environment
  • Supervisory or leadership experience in some capacity, preferably of teachers or tutors

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctorate in second language acquisition, linguistics, language, or related field
  • Teaching or training experience in a university setting
  • Experience with online/blended course design
  • Experience in language advocacy and development of marketing/informational materials
  • Ability to teach one of languages taught at DU is a plus

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 10.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $60,000-$70,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
