The Center for Judaic Studies (CJS) serves the needs of scholars working to preserve centuries of knowledge as well as Colorado’s broader Jewish community. Through academic studies at the undergraduate, M.A. and Ph.D. levels, we strive to promote cultural understanding through interdisciplinary studies in Jewish languages, philosophy, history, literature, and film. Beyond campus, we engage students and faculty through programming and social action. The Center invites esteemed scholars, religious, and thought leaders, including Holocaust survivors, to share their insight with our students and community. CJS also serves as the home for two historical preservation organizations as part of our deep commitment to preserving Jewish global culture.
The University of Denver seeks a Director of the Rocky Mountain Jewish Historical Society (RMJHS). This endowed directorship requires robust leadership, development, programming, and interpersonal skills, as well as demonstrated teaching experience. The Director will hold academic credentials in one or more of the fields significant to the American Jewish experience (e.g., anthropology, history, sociology). This position combines a traditional teaching and research role with that of being a public historian. The ideal candidate will therefore also have a demonstrated track record in one or more of the following areas: community engagement, organizational development/leadership, fundraising.
- The Director will be required to teach two cross-listed courses (CJS + another department) related to the American Jewish experience per academic year under the aegis of CAHSS. At least one of these courses will fulfill University “common curriculum” parameters.
- Housed organizationally within CJS and will report to and collaborate with the CJS director.
- The Director will serve as a public historian who will work across communities in the Rocky Mountain West. These public historian responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Assisting the Curator of the Beck Archives in procuring collections/materials.
- RMJHS donor stewardship and fundraising.
- The creation and implementation of at least three public programs per academic year for RMJHS. The precise nature of these public programs will be managed in collaboration with the CJS director.
- The new Director is expected to acquire expertise in the Colorado and Western American Jewish experience, including developing familiarity with materials housed in the Beck Collection.
- Collaborate with the Beck Curator to connect CAHSS research, teaching, and service to Library Special Collections materials and leadership.
- Actively pursue collection donations for the Beck Archives, as well as fundraising and grant-writing to fund on-going RMJHS programs and activities.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office.
- Excellent ability to work independently, solve problems, provide positive leadership, and demonstrate due discretion and excellent judgment.
- Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree from an accredited academic institution and possess at least three (3) years of experience teaching in one or more of the fields significant to the American Jewish experience (e.g., anthropology, history, sociology).
- Demonstrated publication history and a robust future research program related to the American Jewish experience.
- Three (3) years of experience in communal relations work (e.g., engagement, organizational development/leadership, fundraising).
- Expertise in the history/culture of the Rocky Mountain or American West.
- Demonstrated curatorial and/or archival experience.
- Successful track-record of fundraising and/or grant-writing.
- Proficiency in two or more languages.

The salary grade for the position is 13.
The salary range for this position is $90,000-100,000.
