The Behavioral Health Consultant/Staff Counselor (BHC) offers mental health services to primary care patients within an integrated health care clinic. This involves using a brief screening tool that integrates questions from the PHQ-9 (Patient Health Questionnaire), the Audit-C, and HCC developed questions to identify patients who are engaging in problematic substance abuse, high risk behaviors, trauma, disordered eating or experiencing emotional distress/mental health issues at the time of their medical appointment. The BHC performs brief assessments (typically 30 minutes) and solution-focused interventions aimed at addressing symptomatology identified at the time of patients medical visits. This position relies heavily on providing psychoeducation and teaching skills to help patients manage their symptoms. Behavioral Activation, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, and Solution-Focused techniques form the basis of most interventions. Typically, patients are seen for one to four sessions and/or referred for other therapeutic services as needed. The BHC works closely with medical, counseling, and psychiatric providers to address the holistic, culturally sensitive health care needs of the University of Denver student community.
