Staff Position Summary

The James C. Kennedy Mountain Campus, Wellness & Recreation Division at the University of Denver is currently seeking part-time staff to assist with its mountain campus operations. These positions are located at the James C. Kennedy Mountain Campus in Red Feather Lakes, CO. The KMC staff are responsible for providing exceptional customer service, maintaining cleanliness, assisting with program/event coordination, and responding to emergency situations.

These are non-benefited positions not to exceed 1,000 hours in a calendar year.

About the Outdoor Experience 

The DU Outdoor Experience is a part of the James C. Kennedy Mountain Campus, Wellness & Recreation Division at the University of Denver. The Outdoor Experience offers programs and services that share the skills and resources that foster confidence in the outdoors. Our core tenants are to provide adventure, a collective approach to fostering community, and environmental stewardship. We execute these tenants through thoughtfully curated clinics, trips, and professional-level training. In true outdoor community style, we live between the main DU urban campus and the James C. Kennedy Mountain Campus.  

Position Summary 

Gain professional experience while exploring all things adventure-oriented. Work as part of a team to provide progressive and modern instruction to individuals and groups of diverse backgrounds.  Lead participants in various outdoor-related outings, clinics, or team-building programs.  

Our program is made of two interconnected teams: 

  • Adventure Team  
    • Hosts and facilitates activities at the James C. Kennedy Mountain Campus for First Ascent, supporting programs for academic courses, camps, and other events.  
  • Outdoor Experience Team 
    • In addition to KMC responsibilities, OE team members will host skill clinics, trips, and other guided activities that can be based out of Denver or at the Kennedy Mountain Campus

Applies skills and job knowledge in an area of specialization to delivery programming; may adapt teaching techniques, tools, materials, and/or equipment to meet needs of the area of specialization; may work on non-routine tasks; resolves issues, respond to emergencies; make working decisions within the area of specialization; responsibility with minimal supervision.

Required Qualifications 

  • Lead Positions – demonstrated competency in an outdoor skill 
  • Lead Positions – 2+ years of experience in an outdoor skill 
  • Basic knowledge of the outdoor skills being taught.  
  • Completion of the Outdoor Leadership Lab or similar training 
  • BLS First Aid + CPR

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Experience working with others in an outdoor setting 
  • Wilderness medicine training, Wilderness First Aid, or Wilderness First Responder 
  • Management of overnight and extended adventure trips
  • 3-years experience and ability to demonstrate competency in an outdoor skill 

Working Environment 

  • Works in all weather conditions and varying facilities and environments. 
  • Works regularly on nights, weekends, and holidays. 
  • Noise level is moderate. 
  • Potential exposure to blood-borne pathogens. 

Physical Activities 

  • Ability to sit and stand repeatedly over many hours or days. 
  • Required to move over uneven terrain carrying upwards of 50 lbs.  
  • Ability to wake up early and/or stay up late 

Work Schedule
Part-time, hours will vary depending upon position and program schedules.

Hourly Rate:

$18.29 - $20.00 Denver-based Staff

$18.29 - $22.00 OE Lead Staff working at KMC
