Position Summary
The Sponsored Projects Business Officer I position in RSECS and KIHA will apply well-defined accounting, budget and business practices to address the business needs of RSECS and aging related faculty including ensuring proper adherence to award requirements, proper accounting of grant expenditures, and assisting with grant forecasting for principal investigators (PIs). The Business Officer I will be responsible for payment services, payroll and procurement related to sponsored programs for PIs in RSECS and for PIs conducting aging research across campus.
Essential Functions
Financial and Budget
- Post award grant financial management for PIs, including monthly analysis and forecasting.
- Accountable for financial transactions and practices within RSECS and KIHA. Ensure compliance with sponsor requirements and University policy.
- Compile and summarize financial data for PIs, ensure they are aware of upcoming grant/gift milestones and deadlines.
- Complete journal entries and budget entries as necessary.
HR and Payroll
- Identify and prepare payroll adjustments as needed.
- Ensure PIs are kept up to date on important HR and payroll laws and regulations.
- Post grant funded benefited positions including both faculty and staff hires.
- Coordinate onboarding process for grant-funded positions, including providing training on University systems and processes.
- For all HR and Payroll process, coordinate with RSECS Business Office and Department Coordinators as needed.
General Administrative Duties
- Ensure procurement contracts related to sponsored programs follow University processes for review and are executed properly and within guidelines provided by the sponsor.
- Ensure accuracy of non-payroll expense through review of monthly p-card submissions for sponsored projects/gifts, providing Concur and other payment systems support to grant personnel and PIs, processing and submitting payments for reimbursements.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Conduct financial management responsibilities.
- Require a general knowledge of DU’s accounting and budget procedures.
- Ability to work with and manipulate spreadsheets.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as budget spreadsheets, grants and contracts.
Required Qualifications
- Two-year degree or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Two years of administrative, business, or financial management experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Graduation from a four-year college or university and one year of experience in business or administration management to include experience in financial management.
- Knowledge of Banner or other database system.
- Experience working with sponsored programs.
- Experience working in higher education.
Working Environment
- The work environment is a university with cyclical periods of increased workloads with the possibility of moderate to high stress levels.
- The work environment consists of surroundings with moderate noise levels and frequent contact with electrical devices.
Physical Activities
- Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period.
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
Work Schedule
Part-time, 30 hours a week. The successful candidate can negotiate their schedule within the hours of 8:00-4:30 M-F.
In accordance with the University’s flexible work policy, this position is eligible to be considered for partial remote work. Further details regarding this plan will be determined with the hiring manager and are dependent on the division and team specific needs.

The salary grade for the position is 9.
Hourly Range
The hourly range for this position is $30.65 - $35.76.
