Position Summary
The Academic Support Specialist will support admissions and student academic advising in the MLIS@Denver Program. The responsibilities include reviewing admission applications, academic advising, supporting retention efforts, monitoring student progress, overseeing selected courses in the online program, and communicating with faculty and students. We are interested in qualified candidates who can contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion through this role and are passionate about educating future library professionals. The Academic Support Specialist in the MLIS@Denver Program will work collaboratively with the Department Chair, MLIS@Denver Program Manager, LIS faculty, and the program’s Administrative Services Coordinator. This position reports to the Chair of the Research Methods and Information Science Department.
This is a non-benefited position not to exceed 1,000 hours in a calendar year.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Excellent communication skills to effectively communicate with students, faculty, adjunct instructors, staff, administration, and 2U staff
- Demonstrated familiarity and experience with fully online programs and the needs of remote students
- Demonstrated interest and knowledge of academic advising and student success
- Experience working with diverse communities
- Proven ability to prioritize tasks, plan work within larger contexts of program goals and work independently.
Responsibilities
- Support the MLIS@Denver program in alignment with the mission of the college and in alignment with the accreditation requirements
- Participate in application review in collaboration with the MCE Office of Admissions
- Advise 50-60 online students in the MLIS@Denver program
- Assist the students with completing and submitting the Coursework Plan
- Advise students on the course selection
- Monitor student progress and address student concerns
- Provide career guidance and advice on professional development
- Approve program-related documentation
- Review coursework plans, graduation requirements, and Portfolios
- Refer students to appropriate University resources
- Provide additional support for students who are at retention risk
- Participate in regular and as-needed meetings with 2U staff and the Program’s Leadership team
- Participate in program overview webinars and admitted student webinars
- Serve as a course lead for four online courses
- Communicate with the Department Chair, MLIS@Denver Program Manager, and LIS faculty
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- Two years of professional experience in libraries, archives, or other cultural heritage or information organizations.
Preferred Qualifications
- A Master’s degree in library and information science
- Prior experience in academic remote advising
- Prior experience in teaching online courses
- Experience working within a university setting
- Professional history of managing people or projects
- Expertise in culturally and linguistically diverse education and social justice.
Work Schedule
- Average of 20 hours per week
Working Environment
- Standard office environment or remote work
- Noise level is quiet to moderate.
Physical Activities
- Ability to sit or stand in front of a computer for an extended period of time.

Hourly Range
The hourly pay range for this position is $26.00 - $29.00.
