The Department of Media, Film and Journalism Studies (MFJS) in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Denver offers students a robust understanding of the role of the media in contemporary society. With its emphasis on developing strong communication skills across various platforms and its grounding in the critical evaluation of media practices, the Department's offerings prepare students for the pursuit of excellence in the constantly evolving media, film and journalism professions. The Department offers undergraduates degrees in film studies and production, journalism studies, media studies, and strategic communication (public relations). At the graduate level, the Department offers a master of arts in media and public communication (strategic communication or media and globalization emphasis) and a master of arts in international and intercultural communication.

Position Summary

The Department of Media, Film and Journalism Studies at the University of Denver invites applications for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Media, Race, Equity & Justice to begin September 2022. We seek candidates with an innovative research or creative work agenda with an ability to teach multimedia journalism courses focused on Black, Indigenous, Latinx (Latine), and/or Asian storytelling. The ideal candidate will be able to teach classes that equip students with the media production, editing, and storytelling skills necessary to prepare them for the future of journalism and public communication, and will have a demonstrated commitment to antiracist teaching. This search is open in terms of the candidate's methodological and theoretical approaches to scholarship and/or creative work.

We encourage applicants whose work addresses far-reaching societal and cultural shifts emerging alongside the growing pervasiveness of digital technologies, with focus on cultural and ideological dimensions and impacts in areas such as networked and digital journalism, tech industry studies, multimedia storytelling, and/or technology in everyday life. We are particularly interested in those whose research methods and/or creative applications are evolving to meet the challenges of studying digital production, practices, data collection and use, etc.

Essential Functions

Teach courses in multimedia storytelling and advocacy journalism with a focus on media, race, equity, and justice. Ability to teach critical intercultural communication at the graduate level is a plus. The candidate will also participate in the advising and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students. The normal teaching load is 5 courses spread across 3 academic quarters in an academic year.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Maintain an active research and/or creative agenda.
  • Ability to teach undergraduate and graduate production courses, including Producing Video for Social Media and Introduction to Field Production and Editing.
  • Ability to teach media studies courses with a focus on justice, equity, diversity, inclusion, and internationalization that fulfill common curriculum requirements across the campus.
  • Ability to suggest new courses relevant to the skill-sets of our majors.
  • Ability to advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in media studies, journalism studies or related field by September 1, 2022.
  • A research or creative work agenda focused on studies of media, race, equity, and justice.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Past and ongoing experience in digital multimedia production (for example, as a digital/multimedia journalist, documentarian, podcaster, etc.)
  • Community-engaged research and/or public scholarship.
  • Ability to teach critical intercultural communication.
  • Participant in national and/or international scholarly or creative networks and organizations.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is UC.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $72,000-$75,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
