The Department of Facilities Management supports the mission of the University of Denver's physical resources in order to provide a healthy and safe educational environment for campus community through services of the departments of Capital Projects and Planning, Facilities Management, Parking & Mobility Services, Auxiliaries & Real Estate, and Business & Operations.

Position Summary

With little or no supervision, this position performs repairs and maintenance at a semi-skilled level routine maintenance, field layout, irrigation system maintenance.

Essential Functions

In addition to following the University of Denver’s policies and procedures, principal responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Performs preventive maintenance on irrigation/sprinkler systems; checks systems for proper operation. Troubleshoots existing problems and assists in complex remedies.
  • Provides technical expertise and manual labor for installation of new irrigation systems or expansion of existing systems.
  • Maintenance activities and repairs on existing irrigation/sprinkler systems.
  • Assists with the installation of new irrigation systems and expansion of existing systems.
  • Assists with the installation of time clocks that operate irrigation systems.
  • Assist in the requisitioning supplies and parts of irrigation system maintenance; makes periodic inventory of supplies and notifies supervisor of needed materials.
  • Maintains related records and drawings of irrigation systems in place on the property and keeps them updated regularly.
  • Picks up, collects, removes litter and debris from all ground areas.
  • Picks up material ordered by Physical Plant when not delivered by common carrier.
  • Removes snow by power equipment or shovel from parking lots, sidewalks, exterior stairs, ramps, and terraces.
  • Waters lawn and planted areas by hand or sprinkler systems.
  • Performs minor repairs, lubricates and sharpens equipment. Reports complex repair needs to supervisor.
  • Drives to sites with tools and equipment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as material safety data sheets, operating manuals, and work orders. Ability to communicate effectively with Physical Plant customers (students, staff, faculty and visitors)
  • Basic math skills required when measuring and performing take offs for miscellaneous jobs.
  • Ability to follow procedures and use commonsense to carry out assignments furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in a variety of situations.
  • Basic computer skills. Knowledgeable working with Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Familiar working with Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) software, including WebTMA.

Required Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • One year experience in grounds and/or irrigation.
  • Valid Colorado Driver's License and insurable by the University of Denver's insurance carrier.
  • Pass a pre-employment physical exam and lift 100 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of all types of landscaping and grounds maintenance equipment

Working Environment

  1. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions.
  2. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles.
  3. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and /or humid conditions, toxic and caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock and vibration.
  4. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Physical Activities

  1. Moderate to strenuous physical effort required.
  2. Worker must be able to withstand long periods of time bending, couching, sitting, standing, reaching and repetitive motions with the hand-wrist and elbow-shoulder.
  3. This position requires the operation of semi-heavy machinery including mowers, chain saws, weed-eaters, and other power-driven equipment.
  4. Duties also include working with pole saws and from ladders and scaffolds as high as 40 feet.
  5. The employee must be able to work outside in all types of weather and lift, move and carry objects in excess of 100 pounds.
  6. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Schedule

The University’s administrative offices are open Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Work schedule may vary.

Salary Grade Number:

The salary grade for the position is 04.

Hourly Range:

The hourly range for the position is $19.17.
