Position Summary

As a member of the Advancement division’s Strategic Analytics & Prospect Development (SAPD) team, the Business Analyst’s role is to use data to create and share insights and support the Advancement team in embracing a culture of measurement where all team members are supported in developing data literacy and using quantitative and qualitative data to guide their work. This position performs various tasks: partnering with colleagues in fundraising, alumni engagement, and career services to identify reporting needs, analyze existing reports, and create new systems for analyzing data, tracking progress, and improving processes. The Business Analyst must be able to offer consultative support and develop new reports and processes that are accurate, clear, accessible, and replicable.

Essential Functions

Strategic Collaboration & Training

  • Collaborate with colleagues throughout Advancement to identify opportunities to use reporting and analytics to guide strategy, track work, and measure outcomes.
  • Serve as a liaison and consistent partner to select groups within Advancement to ensure their reporting needs are met and provide guidance and support for analysis.
  • Areas of reporting include alumni engagement, fundraising activities, moves management, pipeline reporting, career services, and employee engagement.
  • Collaborate with University IT to continuously improve data structures and reporting data sources.
  • Train end-users on how to access reports, locate documentation, and appropriately use reports and dashboards.
  • Provide support for survey development and analysis.

Documentation &Quality Control

  • Create documentation including data definitions and meta-data to ensure that both report users and BIA colleagues understand how report fields and parameters are defined and calculated.
  • Provide quality control for reports and queries developed by other BIA team members.

Project Management & Process Improvement

  • Lead and contribute to business process analyses.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and provide leadership in the implementation of identified process improvements.
  • Manage reporting projects independently from inception to completion.
  • Follow up with report users to maintain reports and make adaptations in response to changing operations and strategies.
  • Track work and communicate project progress and statuses in BIA’s task management solution, Asana.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to strategic discussions, connecting the science of research with the art of relationship building.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead within a team and promote partnership, while also working independently, setting priorities, juggling tasks as needed, and completing projects within specified timeframes amidst a fast-paced work environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines while managing multiple tasks and concurrent priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to use reporting tools such as Cognos, Tableau, SSRS, Visual Studio, or SPSS to create and deliver end-user reports.
  • Flexible and highly organized self-starter with a curious mind for data/reporting.
  • Must be able to gather, transform, and present data in an organized and meaningful way. Must be able to communicate technical problems to non-technical professional staff.
  • Solid knowledge of MS Office Suite
  • Strong attention to detail and analytical skills.
  • Strong sense of curiosity and critical thinking.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in quantitative research methods, statistics, business, higher education, or related social science field or equivalent combination of education and work experience (Veterans with equivalent combination of military certification/education and experience may substitute for the degree qualification)
  • 3 years of experience working with complex datasets, including data collection and preparation, analysis, and reporting.
  • Experience supporting and training business users in an administrative system, program, or process.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in quantitative research methods, statistics, business, higher education, or related social science field.
  • Experience supporting report programming in a non-profit organization and/or higher education setting.
  • SQL programming experience.
  • Familiarity with Customer Relationship Management (CRM) databases.
  • Microsoft CRM Dynamics software experience.
  • Use of reporting tools such as Cognos, Tableau, SSRS, Visual Studio, or SPSS to create and deliver end-user reports.
  • Experience with process mapping, process analysis, project management, or data mining.

Working Environment

  • Standard open office environment
  • Noise level is quiet to moderate

Physical Activities

  • Ability to use a computer for an extended period
  • Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs. with assistance

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., some nights and weekends as required. This position is eligible for full remote work.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 9.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $60,000 - $70,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
