Position Summary
This position develops a thorough knowledge of federal, state, and institutional financial aid topics to counsel students and parents about receiving financial aid at DU. This person trains and directs other full-time employees by providing direction and support in daily work. He or she provides training to other financial aid staff members on federal, state and institutional compliance issues. The Assistant Director of Compliance has primary responsibility for specific program, training, and monitoring needs. This position is also instrumental in the development of financial aid programs, including event planning, and the creation/updating of office policy and procedures associated with programs in which they are involved.
Essential Functions
Provides professional advising services:
- Develops and presents staff training modules/sessions for new and current staff to stay abreast of changes to federal and state guidance and regulations.
- Administers and conducts ongoing reviews and quality control of all Conflicting information and Verification Processes to ensure compliance and evaluate training needs.
- Requires a thorough knowledge of financial aid topics including: cost of attendance, federal and institutional need analysis, award package, types of aid offered, how to apply for outside scholarships, receiving outside resources, payment options, financing options, selecting a lender, completing loan applications, loan certification, billing, disbursement dates, reapplying for aid, withdrawal, stop-out, re-admit, timelines/deadlines, financial aid policy and procedures, and the responsibilities of receiving financial aid.
- Routinely deals with problems and issues of a highly sensitive financial and personal nature, and therefore must exhibit independent judgment, tact and diplomacy, maintain strict confidentiality, and adhere to data sharing regulations.
- Responsible for completing R2T4 calculations and monthly reconciliation to ensure financial aid compliance.
- The Assistant Director of Compliance also may have responsibilities in routine system tasks including on-going support of Banner jobs, running revised award letters, batch posting of files, and resolving verification, processing, and compliance problems using standard queries and reports.
Evaluating and identifying issues and problem-solving student applicant data conflicts:
- Problem solving for aid applicants include resolving FAFSA comment codes and rejects, verification and file review, packaging aid revisions, adjusting student budgets, correcting over awards, monitoring students on satisfactory academic progress (SAP).
- Participates in the development of existing or new financial aid and other campus-based programs associated with funding educational expenses to serve students from specific populations. Assigned responsibilities require considerable planning and coordination, including adhering to federal, state, and institutional policies, while providing advisement from the financial aid perspective.
- Provide in-house trainings or inform Office of Financial Aid staff of the statuses of existing or new financial aid and other campus-based programs associated with funding educational expenses to serve students from specific populations.
- Conduct research on matters of financial aid compliance or data to contribute to decision-making processes in the office.
Continuous Professional Development:
- The Assistant Director of Compliance must actively keep up to date on state and federal regulations and internal policies and procedures to ensure accurate and efficient interpretation of information and to ensure program compliance.
- Must be able to handle numerous complex tasks with attention to detail in a fast-paced environment. The Financial Aid Advisor works as a team member with the other Financial Aid Advisors to deliver high quality service to students and their families.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Expert knowledge of financial aid processes, guidelines, and procedures.
- Demonstrated strong skills in conflict resolution, verbal and written communication, time management, coordination and event planning, and human relations.
- The position requires proficiency with standard MS Office software applications.
- Proficiency with Ellucian Banner or similar financial aid software.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelors degree and general knowledge of financial aid processes, guidelines, and procedures including three years of higher education experience. Master’s degree may substitute for experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with CSS Profile, expertise in federal and institutional need analysis, the ability to interpret and analyze income and assets, and knowledge of professional judgment techniques is preferred.
- Ability to resolve data integrity issues in and discrepancies within Banner is preferred.
- Event planning and public speaking experience.
Working Environment
- Standard office environment.
- Noise level is quiet to moderate.
- Some weeknight/weekend and holiday work is required. The Advisor will travel to present and/or attend financial aid workshops and conferences.
Physical Activities
- Ability to use a computer for an extended period.
- Occasionally required to move about the office/campus
Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Salary Range
The salary range for this position is $65,000 - $75,000.
The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
