Position Summary
This full-time position reports to the Coordinator of Cataloging and Metadata Services Librarian, performs the highest-level cataloging, and is responsible for a variety of library tasks including complex edit, adaptive, and original cataloging in all formats. This position possesses an advanced understanding of cataloging rules, standards and the ability to interpret overall library policy and procedures. Ability to resolve complex cataloging issues; contributes analysis and quality assessment of vendor supplied records; works independently to solve problems. This position also works closely with the Curator of Special Collections, subject-specialist librarians and other staff to create enhanced bibliographic access to materials. Supervises and trains hourly cataloging staff as needed.
Essential Functions
- Performs complex edit, adaptive, and original cataloging in all formats using a variety of resources in a multi-system, networked environment, and/or contributes to national bibliographic or authority databases following current MARC and RDA standards.
- Performs complex edit, adaptive, and original cataloging for all serials following current MARC and RDA standards as defined by organizations such as CONSER.
- Working independently, recognizes and solves problems related to bibliographic records including attached holdings and item records; checks and updates library holdings; performs a variety of additional database maintenance tasks.
- Maintains a thorough knowledge and understanding of current cataloging rules, standards and practices, including RDA, MARC, LCSH, LCC, and local cataloging practices and procedures.
- Works on special projects related to cataloging and database maintenance, and other duties as assigned.
- Supervises and trains hourly non-benefited cataloging staff as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Because the library acquires materials in a variety of foreign languages, working knowledge of foreign languages is an advantage.
- Advanced knowledge of cataloging rules, standards, and practices with the ability to resolve complex cataloging problems.
- Good judgment, problem-solving, and decision-making skills are needed to select and download appropriate records, to apply cataloging rules and practices correctly, and to ensure that records are accurately edited and fully accessible to patrons.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
- Ability to follow established procedures and to perform work with great attention to detail.
- Ability to use an automated library system and PC.
- Ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively in a team-based organization.
Required Qualifications
- Experience working in a technical services or cataloging environment within a library or other equivalent institution.
- High school diploma or GED.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with the Ex Libris Alma library services platform, OCLC, RDA and LC classification schemes and subject headings.
- Experience cataloging specialized materials, including but not limited to non-monographic formats, musical scores, and serials.
- Supervisory experience.
Working Environment
- Standard office environment.
- Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high.
- Noise level is quiet to moderate.
Physical Activities
- Ability to work in front of a computer for extended periods of time.
- Occasionally required to move about the office/campus.
Work Schedule
Flexible hours, but generally Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Hourly Range
The starting hourly range for the position is $25.54 - $26.00.
