The Endowed Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of the Practice will join the Fritz Knoebel School of Hospitality Management, one of the oldest hospitality programs in the U.S. Fritz Knoebel serves undergraduate students earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a major in Hospitality Management and other undergraduates from across campus in non-major classes. The team consists of four full-time, tenured faculty members and approximately 10 industry faculty members who teach on a part-time basis. Three full-time staff members serve the school in critical support roles. In addition to its academic function, the school operates the Joy Burns Center as a meeting and event facility under the direction of the Knoebel Events team of six professionals. The school also operates a full-service, student-run coffee shop, Beans Café, during the academic year. Knoebel Events and Beans serve as a training ground for students.

Position Summary

The Endowed Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of the Practice will have responsibility for teaching, service and some administrative responsibilities associated with the school’s beverage courses. We are open to applicants with a variety of perspectives and teaching approaches, though our need is specifically in the beverage space. We have a strong preference for candidates interested in teaching wine, spirits and beer-related courses, including from a managerial perspective.
The Endowed Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of the Practice will be expected to teach eight courses during the academic year, which may include fall, winter, and/or spring quarters. Producing peer-reviewed academic publications may result in a reduced teaching load. Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate courses in and outside of the hospitality major using traditional, hybrid, and online delivery methods. Teaching responsibilities may involve day, night, and weekend classes. The opportunity to teach courses designed for the community and industry professionals also exists and may create the opportunity for additional pay as may teaching during the nine-week summer quarter. The Endowed Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of the Practice is expected to participate in the academic life of the Fritz Knoebel School of Hospitality Management and the Daniels College of Business.

Essential Functions

Teaching: The Endowed Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of the Practice will be expected to teach eight courses throughout the academic year, which may include fall, winter, and spring quarters. The administrative responsibilities of the position may reduce this teaching load to seven per year via a course release. DU follows the quarter system, with three, 10-week long academic terms in Fall (early September-late November), Winter (January-mid March), and Spring (Late March-first week of June). There may also be opportunities to teach during the nine-week summer quarter.

Service: The Endowed Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of the Practice will be expected to participate in the academic life of the Fritz Knoebel School and the Daniels College of Business, including attendance at faculty meetings, participation in assurance of learning, curriculum development, and Fritz Knoebel School community activities. Significant involvement with students is expected of all faculty members. A primary function of faculty members in the Professors of the Practice Series is to provide students with connections to the professional fields the students will be entering.

Engagement: The Endowed Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of the Practice is expected to engage with the professional food and beverage community in Denver via industry organizations such as EatDenver, the Colorado Restaurant Association, Colorado Association for Viticulture & Enology, International Wine & Food Society and the Wine Education Institute.

Required Qualifications

  • An undergraduate degree in business, viticulture, viniculture or a related area.
  • Level III certification in wine from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust, or equivalent. Note that Master of Wine certification from WSET satisfies the Level III requirement.
  • A minimum of eight years of experience in some combination of viticulture, viniculture, beverage management and/or professional sales.
  • Expertise, achievements, and reputations developed over a sustained period of time that qualify them to be distinguished professionals in an area of practice.
  • Demonstrated potential for strong performance in teaching, service and industry engagement as defined under Essential Functions.
  • Demonstrated experience interacting with inclusive communities or evidence of a commitment to incorporate inclusive teaching methods and/or pedagogies to effectively engage student populations.
  • Teaching experience at the college/university level in the food and beverage area, with excellent teaching evaluations.
  • Strong English communication skills (written and oral).

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Master degree in business, viticulture, viniculture or a related field.
  • Wine certification at a comparable level to WSET’s Master of Wine.
  • A minimum of ten years of experience in some combination of viticulture, viniculture, beverage management and/or professional sales.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with a variety of teaching methods and/or curricular perspectives.
  • Demonstrated experience engaging inclusive populations and students with different learning styles.

Working Environment

  • Standard office environment.
  • Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high.
  • Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

  • Ability to work in front of a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Occasionally required to move about the office/campus.

Work Schedule
While the University's administrative offices are open Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, faculty schedules vary from term to term and are based on courses taught, service commitments, and research agendas. The University's academic calendars are posted on the registrar's website (the law school is on a semester system and has a different academic calendar).

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is UC.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $110,000 - $160,000.
