The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) supports the University community in their pursuit of research and the management of externally sponsored programs. ORSP is the key point of contact for faculty in sponsored research and other sponsored programs, as well as research conduct and compliance.

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Research and Financial Operations, this position will perform financial analyses, including data gathering, reconciliations, reporting, and monitoring of financials as it relates to sponsored awards, Facilities and Administrative Rates (F&A), Fringe Benefits, and general accounting to ensure transparency. Interaction, both written and verbal, with university personnel at various levels to obtain and provide accounting information. This position provides field training and support for all areas of campus on topics relating to F&A, data, and reporting.

Provides grant-specific support services and guidance to the Senior Vice Provost for Research/Principal Investigator and is responsible for post-award administration of project funding and expenditures for these grants.

Essential Functions

  • Prepare F&A and research fringe rate proposals as required and submit to respective agency in accordance with regulations.
  • Maintain and operate CRIS system used in production of generating F&A and research fringe rates.
  • Designs, creates, and submits financial reports and invoices to meet external agencies requirements.
  • Maintains, monitors, and updates reporting requirements and schedules to ensure financial reports are submitted in a timely manner as required by the agency and to ensure accuracy of institutional data and records.
  • Works collaboratively to research and resolve issues, escalating as needed.
  • Analyzes financial data to identify potential risks and issues. Presents data and issues (quantitatively and qualitatively) in a way that is meaningful to departments, colleagues, managers, and auditors. Proposes resolutions for complex issues and for financial management best practices.
  • Documents all work so that it is clear to other staff or auditors. Provides requested documentation for internal or external audits.
  • Provides backfill support for peers, as needed.
  • Work closely with principal investigator through the life cycle of the sponsored program project providing guidance and processes on faculty effort allocation, personnel hiring, equipment acquisitions, consulting services requirements, sub award establishment and other tasks pertaining to the operational needs of the project.
  • Analyzes grants and contracts budget variance reports for salary and non-salary cost categories including projection of the award expenditures through the end of the project period.
  • Performs on-going reconciliation of the grant accounts versus budget and adheres to monthly review to avoid cost transfers that may arise in the interim.
  • Works with the principal investigator to manage study and research budgets, monitor transaction and expenditures on the restricted accounts.

  • Knowledge of finance, audit practices, grants, and research administration.
  • High degree of proficiency in Microsoft Office programs such as Teams, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Intermediate to advanced expertise in Microsoft Excel (e.g., formulas, filters, charts, and pivot tables) and other Microsoft tools.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving skills with a high attention to detail.
  • Ability to work, lead and thrive in a fast-paced operations group & manage multiple priorities for cross functional initiatives.
  • Proven customer service skills (e.g., listening, empathy, communication, interpersonal, etc.).
  • Able to work effectively both independently and in a team-oriented environment.
  • Demonstrated agility working with systems and reporting.
  • Ability to handle complex and confidential information with discretion and judgment.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Problem-solving orientation and ability to be thorough and detail-oriented, but also summarize and convey the bigger picture.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • Three plus (3+) years of direct accounting, financial management, and data analysis experience. 
  • Working knowledge of accounting and direct experience in financial management (incurring expenses, invoicing and reporting, accounts payable, and/or accounts receivable).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with fund accounting or sponsored accounting.
  • Experience in a research environment.
  • Experience auditing or responding to an audit.
  • Strong financial experience in sponsored programs/grants administration.

Working Environment

1. Standard office and classroom environment.
2. Unexpected interruptions occur often, and stress level is moderate to high.
3. Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

1. Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period.
2. Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Occasional evenings and weekends.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 11.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $65,000 - $75,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
