Position Summary

The University of Denver is pleased to announce a search for the Rice Family Professor of the Practice of International and Public Affairs at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies. The position offers an extraordinary opportunity for an experienced policy practitioner to contribute to the Korbel School’s academic programs and to enhance its impact and visibility locally, nationally, and internationally.

We seek candidates with a distinguished record of service in the public, private or non-profit sectors; demonstrable expertise in international affairs or public policy; and a strong interest in teaching and mentoring students. Priority areas of desirable experience include, but are not limited to, economic policy and policy-making, environmental sustainability, security (broadly construed), human rights and social justice, democratic governance, and interconnections among all of these. We would want the candidate to use their experiences, knowledge, and connections to teach and mentor students and help link Korbel faculty and students with relevant policy communities.

The position will begin on September 1, 2025.

The terms of the appointment may be:

(1) Full-time for 6 months, renewable once upon agreement of the Dean for a second full-time 6-month term; or

(2) Half-time for 1 year, renewable twice upon agreement of the Dean for up to a third year in half-time service.

The candidate will be appointed as a visiting professor and hold the honorific of the Rice Family Professor of the Practice.

The expectation is that the successful candidate will spend the bulk of their time in residence at DU, as appropriate within the terms of their appointment. Visiting Professors are considered faculty members, who are present on campus, attend faculty gatherings and School and University events, and participate in intellectual and social life at Korbel and DU.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree.
  • 10 or more years of experience as a policy practitioner in the United States or internationally, in governments at any level, international organizations, non-governmental organizations, or the private sector.
  • Willingness to teach courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels and provide mentoring for students related to the candidate’s policy expertise.
  • Willingness to contribute to the Korbel School’s programming on matters related to the candidate’s policy expertise.
  • Demonstrated willingness and ability to contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion through their teaching and service.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree or higher.
  • More than 15 years of experience as a senior policy practitioner in the United States or internationally, in governments at any level, international organizations, non-governmental organizations, or the private sector.
  • Successful teaching experience.
  • Track record of publication and other communication for public audiences.

Working Environment

1. Standard office environment.
2. Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high.
3. Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

1. Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period of time.
2. Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.

Work Schedule

While the University's administrative offices are open Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, faculty schedules vary from term to term and are based on courses taught, service commitments, and research agendas. The University's academic calendars are posted on the registrar's website (the law school is on a semester system and has a different academic calendar).

Salary Grade Number:

The salary grade for the position is UC.

Salary Range:

The salary range for this position is $75,000-$90,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
