Founded in 1982, The Learning Effectiveness Program (LEP) is an internationally recognized fee-based program at the University of Denver that provides individualized support for over 400 neurodiverse learners with Learning Disabilities, and/or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), students on the Autism Spectrum, and students who have a history of learning differences. LEP provides students with comprehensive programming that includes the following components: academic counseling, tutoring, social-skill building, executive functioning support, and student leadership opportunities.
The mission of the LEP is to support learning and neurodiversity by providing students opportunities and resources for personal growth, academic skill building, and connection. and connection.
Position Summary
The LEP Academic Counselor will provide academic support to a caseload of students by meeting with each student for an hour each week and being available during normal work hours by phone and email. The Academic Counselor will work with the student on areas of student development related to self-awareness, self-advocacy, self-determination, and accountability; as well as assisting the student in navigating the 10-week quarter; connecting with the appropriate resources; planning, organization, time management. The Academic Counselor will develop and maintain positive and productive working relationships with students assigned to their caseload and as appropriate, with their families. The Academic Counselor will demonstrate a commitment to the principles of Inclusive Excellence through involvement and participation in university/division-wide projects and initiatives, and demonstrate a desire to continue to learn and grow by taking advantage of professional development opportunities.
This position is one of two Transitions Programmers. As a part of the Transitions Team, this position will develop resources and programs that support LEP students through transitional touchpoints in their collegiate journey. One of these programs is FLYTE Orientation Weekend, the LEP’s pre-orientation program for roughly 120 incoming students and their families.
This position will also assist with updating marketing materials and the website, providing LEP updates to internal and external partners, and producing, implementing, and reviewing data for the annual assessment report.
This is a 12-month full time, benefitted position. This position reports to the Associate Director of the Learning Effectiveness Program.
Essential Functions
Academic Learning – provide academic learning and development strategies to assist an assigned caseload of students with learning disabilities, ADHD, history of learning differences, on the Autism Spectrum, etc.
Education and Training – Actively engage in professional development at the university, division, and departmental levels. Conduct trainings on UDL, executive functioning, time management, organizational skills, working with students with learning differences, learning styles, stress and anxiety management, etc. Attend conferences for professional development and to represent LEP and the University.
Programming – Develop and implement programming for LEP students around transition and/or social skills building including: Creating resources and writing curriculum to support students. Designing, managing and implementing LEP student events and workshops, including FLYTE Orientation Weekend. Hiring, training, and supervising student leaders. Providing engagement opportunities for LEP students.
Campus Collaboration - Work with faculty and staff educators to create equitable access to learning by sharing strategies and resources on how to work with student with learning disabilities, ADHD, history of learning differences, on the Autism Spectrum, etc.
Administration - Inspire notes entered within 24 hours; assessment including data collection, surveys, analyzing results and writing for the final report; contract renewal completed; answer emails and voice messages within 24 hours
Special Projects and Other Duties as Assigned – Support Eye to Eye and the ADDventure Conferences, lead prospective Student Visits, teamwork, and supervise of LEP Peer Leaders

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in psychology, special education, or closely related field
- Experience working with students with learning differences in an educational setting
- Knowledge of the concepts of Universal Design for Learning
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s in psychology, education, special education, counseling
- Experience working with students in higher education with learning differences
- Experience in event planning
- Experience in program development
- Experience with curriculum design and implementation
- Experience working with students transitioning from K-12 to Higher Ed and/or working with students on social skills building
Working Environment
- Standard office environment, unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high, noise level is quiet to moderate.
Physical Activities
- Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period of time, occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.
Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. with some nights, weekends, and holiday. Schedule to be discussed with supervisor.

The salary grade for the position is 8.
Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $56,500-$57,500
