Position Summary

The University of Denver's Division of Community Support & Engagement (DCSE) is seeking a Director for Multifaith and Pluralistic Engagement to join our team. The Director will be part of the larger divisional team, who work to support faculty, staff, and students across the university.

Reporting to the Vice Chancellor (VC) of Community Support & Engagement, the Director will support the envisioning and implementation of initiatives and engagements that promote multi-faith resourcing, restorative practice, and pluralistic engagements across the university. There will also be a “dotted line” reporting structure to the AVC Partnerships and Operations, the AVC Academic Community Engagement, and the Ombuds for various engagements as detailed below. Further, the candidate filling this position will identify, evaluate, and innovate programs, trainings, practices, and structures that support community and individual well-being and resource the DU community in learning across difference toward creating and sustaining inclusive educational environments and workplaces.

The Director will work collaboratively and in support of the entire University of Denver community, but with a particular focus on supporting faculty and staff. The Director will work evenings and weekends, as needed. This position is full-time, 1.0 FTE.

This role is new and aims to meet expressed needs and areas of growth across campus. As such, the Director will build this role and portfolio under the guidance of the VC for Community Support & Belonging. The Director should embody both strong alignment with the University’s values of inclusion, innovation, excellence, integrity, and engagement, as well as a commitment to efficient and collaborative work.

Essential Functions

Multi-faith Engagement

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate interfaith programming, specifically for faculty and staff.
  • Work in collaboration with the Director of Spiritual life (DU’s student facing student support) in creating areas of shared engagement and learning with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Work towards creating and establishing a partnership chaplaincy program with the joint Iliff/DU Chaplaincy program that will support and engage the DU community in areas of religion, spirituality, meaning making, and belonging.
  • Support and advise religious and interfaith affinity groups for faculty and staff.
  • Support and collaborate with units engaged in the work of religious accommodations.

Restorative Practice

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate restorative practice programming alongside the Ombuds and other members of the DCSE team.
  • Provide 1:1 support via spiritual care conversations in conjunction with the chaplains for faculty and staff.
  • Create and sustain collaborative work alongside practitioners across the university in the work of restorative practices.  These partners include but are not limited to: Spiritual Life, DU’s 4D experience, Civil Rights and Equal Opportunity, Religious Studies, Joint PhD Program with DU/Iliff, Philosophy, etc.

Pluralism

  • Renovate previously established and implement new dialogic programming at DU with the aim of creating and sustaining pluralistic engagements.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Vice Chancellors in DCSE in the creation of training opportunities and support mechanisms for faculty and managers seeking support in implementing pluralistic engagements with their students/teams.

Division of Community Support & Engagement Responsibilities

  • All members of the DCSE team support and engage with the DU community across constituency groups toward creating inclusive education and workspaces, the work of dialogue, pluralism, and de-escalation in programmatic planning and implementation.
  • Establish metrics of engagement, success, and belonging within the role of Multifaith and Pluralistic Engagement.
  • Serve as part of a university wide team tasked with de-escalation and conflict resolution in spaces of pluralistic and freedom of expression engagements.
  • Support DCSE in the planning and hosting of signature and large-scale events.
  • All other Division support as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Collaborative and transparent leadership skills.
  • Well versed in the needs of and approaches to working with multiple and intersectional communities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively across constituency groups, as well as communication across different identities, backgrounds, and experiences.
  • Well versed in conflict resolution and interpersonal mediation frameworks.
  • Ability to work at both an individual and systems level in crafting solutions toward humanizing practices.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply professional ethical standards, regulations, and consultation, legal frameworks for applicable use in working with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Ability to effectively engage across units, departments, and divisions, in building connections and belonging toward community thriving.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's Degree from an accredited university program.
  • A minimum of five (4) years of relevant education and/or work experience related to university processes and engagements.
  • A minimum of three (2) years of supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain collaborative and mutually beneficial relationships with university communities and organizations.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement community programming events and to work productively with individuals across campus to make university events inclusive and successful.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD degree or relevant professional degree.
  • Work experience in higher education or similar educational settings

Working Environment

  • Standard office environment.
  • Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high.
  • Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

  • Ability to work in front of a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Occasionally required to move about the office/campus.

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Evenings and weekends, as needed.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 11.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $68,000-$78,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
