About the Office of Student Billing
The Office of Student Billing is responsible for the billing and collection of tuition-related charges, as well as the administration of Federal Perkins Loans. We work with students and their families to help obtain their educational goals at the University of Denver.
Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Director of Student Billing, the Senior Advisor has primary responsibility for develops a thorough knowledge of all billing policies and procedures associated to tuition and Federal Perkins accounts. Counsel students and parents in regards to receiving tuition statements, credit disbursements, payment options and financial aid at DU. The Senior Advisor provides professional advising service. When requested, the Senior Advisor evaluates and assesses documented changes in financial circumstances that occur in a student’s family during an academic year and exercises professional judgment in adjusting data elements in the formula that determines the student’s ability to pay. The Senior Advisor is also instrumental in the development of processes, including the creation/updating of office policy and procedures associated with programs in which they are involved.
Essential Functions
Supporting Financial Responsibility:
- The Senior Advisor must have expert knowledge in understanding the Financial Responsibility Agreement, in doing so protecting the University from any liability and the student from incurring additional debt.
- The Senior Advisor must be able to communicate in detail the students’ responsibility regarding their debt to the University including possible consequences for late payments or failing to pay in full.
- The Senior Advisor must be able to advise all students on all payment options, including DUPay, DU Payment Plan, Employer Reimbursement and Third-Party billing. By counseling students on their payment options, the Senior Advisor is assisting students in finding the best financial solution to fit their budget and therefore maintaining student retention.
- The Senior Advisor must be able to assist students with past due balances to prevent additional debt from incurring. The Senior Advisor oversees the Tuition Payment Agreement process and can provide guidance to Advising staff when assisting students in setting up a personalized agreement.
- The Senior Advisor must have in depth knowledge of entire Collections process including placement, payments, recalls and paid in full accounts. Processing invoices for payments owed to Collection agencies. This includes a reentry process to the University.
- Must have in depth knowledge of Leaves of Absence, including medical, stop out, suspension and withdrawals. Directing the student to the proper department to initiate the process and making the student aware of the implications of such actions regarding loss of financial aid and resulting tuition balance.
- Must have in depth knowledge of the Tuition Appeal process. Counseling students on the differences for formal and informal appeals as well as varying types of supporting documentation requirements. Directing the student on how to file, deadlines and timeline restrictions.
Administering Federal Perkins Loans:
- The Senior Advisor must actively keep up to date on federal regulations, policies and procedures regarding the Federal Perkins Loan repayment process.
- The Senior Advisor is responsible for coordinating all Exit Counseling sessions either in person or online for graduating students and withdrawn students. Consolidation, forbearance and all types of deferment requirements are explained in detail during exit counseling. The Senior Advisor will conduct each exit counseling session for graduating students and oversee all assisting staff members during session.
- The Senior Advisor must ensure all required federal paperwork is accurate and complete for each exiting student, including truth in lending statement, federal checklist and complete reference request form. Forms are retained by Federal regulations.
Continuous Professional Development:
- The Senior Advisor must actively keep up to date on state and federal regulations and internal policies and procedures to ensure accurate and efficient interpretation of information and to ensure program compliance. The Senior Advisor must be able to handle numerous complex tasks with attention to detail in a fast-paced environment. The Senior Advisor works as a team member with the other Advisors to deliver high quality service to students and their families.
Other duties as assigned
- Some weeknight/weekend and holiday work is required. The Senior Advisor may travel to student financial workshops and conferences.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- MS Office proficiency especially Excel; Ellucian Banner knowledge or similar student financial software.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education or work experience (Veterans with equivalent combination of military certification/education and experience may substitute for the degree qualification).
- 2-3 years’ experience working in Student Financial Services. (One year may be substituted for financial or customer service experience.)
- Experience in conflict resolution, verbal and written communication, time management and business process development.
- Proficient with MS Excel and other MS Office software applications.
- Proficiency in student financial software.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to interpret and analyze student tuition accounts.
- Demonstrated advanced ability to manage large financial data sets and manipulate data in spreadsheets for report generation.
- Ability to resolve data integrity issues in and discrepancies within student financial software.
- Knowledge of student financial processes, guidelines and procedures.
Working Environment
- Standard office environment.
- Noise level is quiet to moderate.
Physical Activities
- Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period.
- Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs. with assistance.
Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Some weeknight/weekend and holiday work is required. The Senior Advisor may travel to student financial workshops and conferences. In accordance with the University’s flexible work policy, this position is eligible to be considered for partial remote work. Further details regarding this plan will be determined with the hiring manager and are dependent on the division and team specific needs.

Hourly Range:
The hourly range for the position is $24.52-$27.59
