The Division of University Relations (UR) builds public awareness, understanding and support for the university's mission and goals. The division includes the marketing, communications, and public affairs units and embraces an integrated approach to executing best-in-class work that achieves strategic outcomes. Among other responsibilities, University Relations:

• Elevates awareness and support of DU’s brand and reputation and advances a sense of pride in the DU experience.

Through our “Lead and Empower” focus, University Relations provides the campus community with expert leadership, partnership, strategy, tools and support to advance successful, on-brand, collaborative marketing communications and public affairs strategies that help achieve the strategic goals of the University, its colleges and units.

University Relations strengthens DU’s strategic position locally, regionally, nationally and internationally through data-driven and authentic marketing, communications and public affairs strategies across multiple channels with focused support for priority areas including academics and research, enrollment and admissions, athletics and advancement. Whether through marketing, web and digital strategies, social media, public relations, print, podcast, issues or crisis management, legislative affairs, community relations or thought leadership and training, UR drives results that empower DU to excel.

Position Summary

The Editorial Creator will serve as a lead contributor to the university’s magazine and newsroom, dedicating the majority of their efforts to generating impactful stories, features, and editorial content. Approximately 70% of this role will focus on researching, writing, and editing for both print and digital publications, as well as developing engaging multimedia content to enhance DU’s storytelling and ensure the university’s narrative remains vibrant and relevant. This position will spend about 10% of their time providing editorial support for the university’s podcast initiatives and providing overall project management support, and 20% supporting experience management (XM) activities, connecting collected experience data to the narratives being shaped for magazine, newsroom, and podcast audiences. The ideal candidate is an exceptional writer and editor with a passion for storytelling in a journalistic context, able to manage multiple projects in a dynamic environment while collaborating closely with a range of university stakeholders.

Essential Functions

Editorial & Newsroom Writing

  • Drive the creation of feature stories, news articles, and campus profiles that capture the university’s spirit and achievements across both print and digital outlets.
  • Engage with faculty, staff, and students to uncover and shape meaningful narratives, ensuring all voices are thoughtfully represented.

Play an active role in advising content strategy, anticipating opportunities to highlight the university’s evolving story.
Content Development

  • Collaborate on executive communications to support the shaping of remarks, talking points, and messaging to best reflect and include the stories collected through editorial discovery.

Create engaging photo and video content to enhance the university’s storytelling and foster deeper audience connection.
Experience Management (XM) Integration 

  • Connect insights from collected experience data with editorial planning, ensuring that the stories told in print, digital, and podcast formats authentically reflect the voices and experiences of the university community.
  • Collaborate with other XM users and stakeholders to interpret survey results and feedback, translating these findings into meaningful content themes and story opportunities that strengthen the university’s narrative.

Podcast and Project Management 

  • Coordinate owned project timelines, approvals, and deliverables to keep editorial and media initiatives on track.
  • Monitor and interpret metrics, using insights to inform future storytelling.
  • Maintain organized archives of published stories, preserving the university’s narrative for future generations.
  • Oversee podcast student contributors and support podcast production efforts.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
  • Familiarity with AP style and editorial best practices.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across teams.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, or a related field.
  • 1 year experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in higher education or mission-driven organizations.
  • Familiarity with experience management.
  • Basic knowledge of SEO and digital publishing practices.
  • Comfort with interviewing and sourcing stories from diverse stakeholders.

Working Environment

  • Standard office environment.
  • Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high.
  • Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

  • Ability to work in front of a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Occasionally required to move about the office/campus.

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 8.

Hourly Range:
The hourly range for the position is $26.56 - $28.10.
