MarComm aims to strengthen DUs strategic position locally, regionally and nationally through data-driven and authentic storytelling across multiple channels with focused support on the universitys value drivers: academics and research; enrollment and admissions, athletics and advancement.
Whether through public or media relations, digital strategies, social media, print, podcast, issues or crisis management, community relations or thought leadership and training, MarComm drives results through narratives that involve words, pictures and design. Position Summary

The Writer is responsible for content written across all University of Denver Marketing and Communications owned platforms (news.du.edu; du.edu; The Bridge newsletter; The University of Denver Magazine; scripts for videos; email marketing; etc.). This position requires an excellent storyteller who is comfortable writing in a variety of tones to appeal to our various audiences from prospective student to faculty to alumni and donors. This position is responsible for writing and editing content written in alignment with style, tone and brand guidelines.

Essential Functions

  • Research, plan and write inspiring, informative, engaging and audience-relevant content for DU- owned digital channels and print publications.
  • Collaborate and consult with the editorial team to develop, research, fact-check and write feature-length articles and thought pieces for the University of Denver Magazine and the Universitys annual report.
  • Initiate and spearhead special team projects, such as themed series for publication on individual channels, coverage for branded events.
  • Produce, oversee the execution and create content for RadioEd episodes, DUs podcast aimed at sharing the Universitys expertise and contributions to the worlds knowledge base.
  • Coordinate with internal team members on a wide variety of University initiatives and integrative projects.
  • Consult with creative/design team on content for marketing materials, whether brochures and catalogs or exhibit text.
  • Use dashboard analytics to measure effectiveness of content through engagement and conversions.
  • Consult with MARCOMM leadership on voice, tone and style of content.
  • Generate creative storytelling ideas and lead execution of these ideas.
  • Research, plan and write content on deadline.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, detail-driven environment.
  • Work with multiple departments across campus to develop story ideas, refine messaging and target key audiences.
  • Assist as needed on internal communications and newsletters
  • Special writing projects as they arise
  • Mentor any interns or work-study students with communications responsibilities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Work collaboratively and enthusiastically with others to achieve organizational goals.
  • Exceptional writing skills.
  • Must be familiar with AP Stylebook guidelines.
  • Excellent storytelling skills, impeccable grammar, and ability write for a variety of digital and print channels including script-writing for video.
  • Demonstrated success in writing personalized content for various audiences with a demonstrated ability to interpret content/style and brand guidelines.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Solid competency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Must be willing to work evenings and weekends.
  • Experience working in a beat structure a plus.
  • Experience working in a higher education field a plus.
  • Research writing a plus.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree or higher in English, Creative Writing, Journalism or related field or equivalent work or military experience
  • 2+ years of professional experience writing content across a variety of digital and print channels.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a beat structure.
  • Experience working in a higher education field.
  • Research writing.

Working Environment

1. Standard office environment.
2. Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high.
3. Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

1. Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period of time.
2. Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 8.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $55,000 - $60,000

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
