Position Summary

The Director of Investigations and Resolution Services is a senior member of the Office of Equal Opportunity& Title IX leadership team. The Director will oversee the management of formal and informal resolutions under the University’s Discrimination and Harassment Policy and Procedures. Reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Equal Opportunity & Title IX, the Director will assure timely, high-quality, equitable, and thorough investigations, inquiries, and informal resolutions of complaints of protected class discrimination. The Director will be responsible for (1) supervising all EOIX investigations and inquiries; (2) coordinating formal hearing or informal resolution of complaints; (3) developing and delivering training on topics related to the University’s compliance with federal and local non-discrimination and anti-harassment laws; (4) providing supervision and training to EOIX investigators; and (5) assisting the Associate Vice Chancellor for Equal Opportunity & Title IX in onboarding and training investigative staff. The Director may also be called upon to conduct investigations or informal resolutions, as necessary.

Essential Functions

The Director of Investigations and Resolution Services will be expected to serve as a neutral administrator to ensure prompt and thorough resolution of alleged incidents of misconduct under the University’s Discrimination and Harassment Policy. Specific responsibilities of the position will include:

  • Conducting informational meetings with individuals reporting misconduct to explain resolution options and determine appropriate resolution.
  • Overseeing investigations of allegations of discrimination, harassment, and gender-based violence, including supervising, advising and mentoring investigators in developing investigative plans, conducting interviews, gathering, and analyzing evidence.
  • Maintaining case management records and providing regular case status updates to the Associate Vice Chancellor.
  • Providing review and quality assurance for all investigative communications, evidence production, reports, and resolution agreements.
  • Developing processes for informal resolutions and facilitating informal resolutions among community members in discrimination and harassment matters.
  • Providing training, guidance, and mentorship to EOIX Investigators on EOIX procedures, workflow, strategies, interview practices, and authoring investigative reports.
  • Conducting climate assessments, inquiries, or administrative reviews of university departments consistent with university policy and procedures.
  • Collaborating with University partners, stakeholders, and community members to create and provide training related to discrimination and harassment, the University’s grievance procedures, and employee reporting obligations.
  • Assisting the AVC for EOIX in reviewing and updating University policies and procedures concerning discrimination, harassment, and gender-based violence to promote compliance with equal opportunity laws and regulations; and
  • Providing other services/duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge and experience working with EO principles contained within Title VI, VII, IX, VAWA/SaVE, ADA, ADEA, and other relevant anti-discrimination laws and regulations specific to higher education, including FERPA and the Clery Act.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed investigation practices.
  • Knowledge of gender-based violence dynamics including sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking sexual assault, relationship violence and stalking.
  • Ability to present findings and support the decision-making process in an objective manner by producing comprehensive and critical reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance a demanding caseload while managing time effectively.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills, with training and/or experience in objective writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage effectively with all levels of university staff, students, and community.
  • Proficient level computer skills, including use of database, word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation applications.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree and five years of experience working in civil rights compliance or conducting discrimination and harassment or related investigations.
  • 5+ years of experience supervising civil rights investigations, hearings, and alternative resolutions in Higher Education or an equally complex setting.
  • Knowledge and experience working with EO principles contained within Title VI, VII, IX, VAWA/SaVE, ADA, ADEA, and other relevant anti-discrimination laws and regulations specific to higher education, including FERPA and the Clery Act.
  • Proficiency with Maxient, CaseIQ, or similar case management system.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in relevant field (e.g., law, human resources, higher education).
  • 10+ years of experience supervising civil rights investigations, hearings, and alternative resolutions.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a higher education civil rights or Title IX enforcement office.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting trauma-informed investigations and demonstrated ability to supervise/train/mentor others.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing alternative dispute resolution options (e.g., mediation, ombuds, restorative practice facilitation).

Working Environment

• Standard office environment.
• Unexpected interruptions occur often, and stress level is moderate to high.
• Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

• Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period.
• Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. In accordance with the University’s flexible work policy, this position is eligible to be considered for partial remote work. Further details regarding this plan will be determined with the hiring manager and are dependent on the division and team specific needs.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 14.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $100,000 ‐ $115,000

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
