Position Summary

Reporting to the Head of Library Instruction and Research Services, the Outreach Librarian is responsible for: liaising with student organizations, student life, and community partners; outreach, advocacy, and programming. This position collaborates with library employees to develop handouts and digital materials about library services. Participating fully as part of the Research & Instruction Department, the librarian provides hour-long general and specialized consultations for students, faculty, and staff in the Research Center, teaches information literacy workshops in assigned disciplines, and participates in instructional programming for first-year foundational courses.

Liaison areas of responsibility may include the Library and Information Science and Research Methods Departments as well as non-traditional and distance learning programs, such as the University of Denver University College/College of Professional Studies. The librarian actively engages in scholarly activities through research and publication and participates in professional organizations, as well as library and campus committees. Appointments will be made at the rank of Assistant Professor, non-tenure track.

Essential Functions

  • Participate as a member of the Research & Instruction Department, collaborating in the operations of the Research Center, teaching library instruction for first year writing classes, and attending regular meetings.
  • Design, lead, and assess student-centered information literacy workshops for liaison areas including occasional evening and weekend classes.
  • Conduct outreach to students, faculty, staff, and community members to ensure that library users are aware of collections, services, and technologies available to them.
  • Provide research consultations with students, faculty and staff at the Research Center.
  • Serve as a liaison in subject areas as assigned.
  • Build collections to meet the research and curricular needs of undergraduate and graduate students and faculty in assigned areas.
  • Serve on library and campus committees.
  • Work in accordance with the promotion guidelines and engage in scholarly activities through research and publication, as a library faculty member.
  • Participate and engage in service commitments with local, regional, and national professional organizations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Duties

  • This position has no formal supervisory responsibilities; however, all members of the Research & Instruction Department provide support to and mentor graduate student workers at the Research Center Desk.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate clearly and knowledgeably, both verbally and in writing.
  • Passion and interest in building campus-community partnerships and supporting college students, including non-traditional and underrepresented students.
  • Strong teaching and presentation skills, with knowledge of information literacy best practices and standards.
  • Flexibility to handle a variety of general reference activities and hour-long research consultations at a busy Research Center.
  • Capacity to build strong connections with faculty, students, and community partners.
  • Ability to use knowledge, experience, awareness, and skills to advance DU’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, and to engage effectively with a broad spectrum of culturally diverse groups.
  • Analytical skills for decision making.
  • Ability to organize work and set priorities.
  • Ability to actively engage in the library organization, including leadership and participation in teams, task forces, and committees, working professionally in support of colleagues, and sharing responsibility as a faculty member in the library’s mission, goals, programs, and plans.
  • Ability to commit to the standards of professional behavior and responsibility as stated in the university’s Guidelines for Appointment, Promotion, & Tenure.

Required Qualifications

  • ALA-accredited masters degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent advanced academic qualification in information services.
  • A successful candidate will demonstrate a knowledge, ability, or potential to engage effectively with culturally diverse communities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in an academic library.
  • Experience in building relationships between libraries and student groups and/or community members.
  • Experience and/or coursework related to reference and/or instruction.
  • Experience developing programming and assessing library outreach.
  • Demonstrated experience or potential to contribute to the profession through research, publication, and service to national and regional professional organizations.

Working Environment

The work environment is an academic library that values a diverse workforce. There are cyclical periods of increased workloads during the academic year, and attention is paid to ergonomics and safety. Library employees collaborate across a flexible hybrid and team-based organization. The University of Denver and University Libraries offer a progressive flexible work policy that permits remote work, which can be negotiated between the employee and their supervisor.

Work Schedule

Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

While the University's administrative offices are open Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, faculty schedules vary from term to term and are based on courses taught, service commitments, and research agendas. The University's academic calendars are posted on the registrar's website (the law school is on a semester system and has a different academic calendar)

Salary Grade Number

The salary grade for the position is UC.

Salary Range

The salary range for this position is $60,000 - $63,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
