Position Summary

The Director of Disbursements is responsible for providing leadership in University Financial Services by managing multiple functions and operational processes along with providing strategic support and analysis. In this key role, this individual will direct and manage all transactional and operational activities which include Accounts Payable, Payroll, Finance, and Travel and Expense management. The Director of Disbursements oversees three direct and five indirect reports. The successful candidate will be a driver of transformation and manages the change initiatives to ensure successful implementation. The effective individual will provide oversite to managers on day to day operations to support the business strategies ensuring continuous improvement and exceptional customer service. The Director of Disbursements will be responsible for evaluating, developing, and implementing financial policies and procedures. This Position reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor, University Financial Services.

Essential Functions

  • Accountable for developing and implementing strategic plans for finance functions within University Financial Services
  • Direct and manage day-to-day operations of the university’s payroll and accounts payable functions including processing, taxes, IRS and other reporting requirements, reviewing and revising policies and procedures, as well as internal controls.
  • Oversee benefits reconciliation function and management of all university change funds.
  • Assist with both internal and external audits to ensure complete, timely and accurate responses to information requests.
  • Has a high level of understanding of federal, state, and local legislative requirements on finance matters (accounts payable, payroll, and travel and expense management).
  • Provides direction and is the go-to person for the team on governance matters.
  • Ensures high levels of performance, achievement of goals, and quality of results through managers and team members. Lead by example and create an environment that fosters process efficiency and effectiveness though encouraging ideas for process change.
  • Ensure accounts payable, payroll and travel management functions meet user requirements and provide services that exceed customer expectations.
  • Build and maintain relationships by collaborating across units and departments to foster trust, commitment, accountability and results.
  • Analyze and evaluate business processes and recommend actions to streamline processes and improve operational efficiencies.
  • Continuously monitor the effectiveness of existing technology and systems to ensure applicability and usefulness of systems.
  • Evaluate and implement new technology solutions in partnership with IT to enhance and improve effectiveness of University Financial Services.
  • Develop appropriate and useful measures and metrics to assess and understand department wide service levels, department and individual performance levels, customer satisfaction, and other information necessary to continuously improve the quality and efficiency of service.

Supervisory Duties:

The Director leads a high performing department with university-wide functions that include payroll, accounts payable, finance, and travel and expense management. The Director must have the ability to build trust both internal and external to the division in order to positively promote and encourage the vision of change management with a focus on exceptional quality and care on customer service and effective output.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of business processes and systems
  • Deep understanding and appreciation for automation and the use of technology as an enabler of high quality services and performance levels
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of higher education culture, governance, structures and mission
  • Demonstrated focus on customer service and compliance
  • Ability to transfer knowledge to co-workers in a collaborative and engaging manner
  • Strong analytical skills and experience and an understanding of how metrics and measures can drive innovation and service level quality
  • Ability to work collaboratively and in partnership with IT to assess and improve technology needs
  • Demonstrated ability to consider implications of complex problems and solutions and taking necessary actions to resolution.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Management or equivalent education and experience.
  • 6-8 years of experience in finance or accounting role
  • 5-8 years of experience in a management role
  • Experience in a similar role requiring the use of technology, business analytics, metrics, and process re-engineering.
  • Experience in designing new processes and integrating technology to provide services in Finance, Accounts Payable, Payroll and
  • Customer Relationship Management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in related field i.e. accounting, finance, business management.
  • Experience with Banner and other systems / technologies used to deliver efficient business services.
  • Experience with software selection and implementation.
  • Experience with Jaggaer.

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.  In accordance with the University’s flexible work policy, this position is eligible to be considered for partial remote work. Further details regarding this plan will be determined with the hiring manager and are dependent on the division and team specific needs.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 15.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $130,000 - $140,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
